Who'd have thunk?

Launched from the ferry landing on Coronado side early Saturday morning. Throwing the blades in the grass for some spotties for the first couple hours. Moved out to the 45-50 foot depth for deep water bass, when I had a mellow pick-up and then big weight. Took off for a nice run and a few head shakes, and then solid weight with some slow thumps. Thought it was a Halibut at first, but didn't feel like one. Then thought it was a bat ray cause I wasn't gaining any ground, just an occasional hard pull and screaming drag. Well after 25 minutes of being towed up current and around for awhile, it gave up and came up tired. I was surprised to see a BSB, 36 inches, and well over 20 pounds. Cut the line and revived after a couple minutes, watching it submarine down in a mirage of bubbles. Awesome feeling! Ended the day throwing the brown, with egg sack orange belly, 3 inch swimbait. Caught well over 30 spotties pretty much here and there all day.

Pretty cool. You never know what might pop up in the bay.

a guy from a surf fishing board got into them pretty heavy in the bay about a month ago from shore. there's a lot of unusual fish in that bay.

good job on lading it!

There are more BSB in the bay than you know. I have a buddy that catches them almost all the time.

As a kid fishing with my dad I remember catching a few of the little BSB when they are still red with back spots. I've seen a few decent sized BSB come out of San Quintin Bay. Mike

I would be thrilled to catch another one, if there are more lurking in the bay. Using 10 lb. line and medium gear, was more of a personal accomplishment. It's always gonna be a blast when a fish can tow me in my yak. :vroam:
