First WSB for 2012
Went fishing with Matt this weekend, got bait and made the 3-4mile peddle. As soon as we got into open water we started heading north, it took us just under an hour to get to the spot. Matt fished the outside of the kelp beds while I fished some of the pockets. After about an hour and two setups being lost to the bottom of the ocean i/we decided to move further north.
We found more kelp mixed in with a combination of rock and sand. Again, I opted to fish inside the kelp and peddled through the alleys for one raked bait. Meanwhile, I kept watching Matt get hungup on hali's, one right after the other:mad: after a while it was obvious that Matt was in the spot and I was wayyyyyyyy out in left field so I decided to swallow my pride and fish next to Matt. Meanwhile, he continues to bring up 10+ hali's left and right and all I could do was watch. About the only thing that I could be proud of was that Matt was using some new setups that I made the day before. Around noon the wind picked up and the drift began, if you stopped peddling for ten seconds you would drift 50'. Around 1pm both my rigs come up in a complete tangle, let the frustration begin! I looked at it for 5seconds and said f-it! I cut every single line right where they meet a swivel, hook or sinker. After about a minute or two my first line was baited and in the water and the second line was just about done when I finally hook up!! I bring it up and its a hali, right around 25-28 inches, the skunk was off the yak! Right around 2pm we decided to let the wind work its magic and we drifted back but not before we decided to fish some kelp. I managed a short hali and my first WSB of the year, it was only 18-20 inches but it was nice to see that although it was a shorty it was in that area. Back on the road around 4pm, home by 6pm. |
Them cute little juveniles fight pretty good huh...Does Matt have too much hali in the freezer again....

Just in case Goeorge's report did not mention it, we were fishing The PV area. My first time fishing that coastline, what a great place. Excellent rock structure mixed with good help and nice sandy areas in the mix.
Like he said the fish were biting real good on sardines. I got my 5 legals, kept three of them. Best part, at the end of the day, the wind pushes you right to the parking lot. P.s. George, I would expect a 10 minute video of your severe thumb injury. I hope insurance covered it. :p |
sounds like a great day, where did you launch from?

I am not keeping any Hali's for a little while. Family, neighbors and my freezer are all full:D
They all taste great. One thing I did notice, open water Hali's seem to put up a bigger fight then inside fish. Iam sure that it's all in my head, but when I was pulling on a 32incher I was already thinking 40inches plus.:):) For sure we ate gonna hit that place up a lot more. |
