How many of you using straight spectra?
Getting tired of re-connect leader to spectra after every time i broke my line.
How many of you using straight spectra? any good or bad experience? I usually just fishing in the harbor, so will not fish too deep....is leader really necessary? |
I used straight spectra for a while. It's great until you hang up on something. I was using 10lb and liked the feel, but it isn't great abrasion wise.

i fish spectra with a flouro leader, i just feel more confident because of the invisibility factor. i know how u feel it used to take me forever to re tie but after a lot of practice i can tie it super fast

I had 30lb spectra on my 300 for quite a while. I fished it straight. Never had too many problem. Its a pain when you get snagged, but I usually got my bait back, just with straightened out hooks. I stopped throwing it after I snagged a 75lb bat ray in the bay though. I could get my line to break and it smoked my reel. I had to rebuild it.

I fish spectra to a small welded ring, then tie on my 5' of fluoro. Works like a charm. Google up "Knot Wars" and check out the Berkeley Braid knot. It works perfectly tied to a ring or swivel.

i use straight spectra for rockfish or kep fishing the wall. there is so much kelp and grass in the water that i'm pretty sure a fish doesnt really care if it can see the spectra on my lure... but if the fish are finicky, i will tie on 12# fluoro.
spectra is great in heavy kelp because it can cut the kelp if a fish tries to wrap you around in it. spectra sucks when you hook a massive rock. |
