Los Alamitos or Cabrillo side?
Recently got a scrambler 11 in january and i've completely bailed on shore fishing. most of the time i kayak to the outside of the LB breakwall. i've fished the LB breakwall from the los alamitos side every time, and i've had decent success with some toad calicos, cabezon, and sculpin... but i hear the cabrillo side is where the flatties lurk.
I was wondering where i should park and launch for the cabrillo side, and any general spots to fish around there. any info would help. i will be fishing tomorrow with my friend from 6am-1pm. if we cant get any info about cabrillo in time then we will be launching from 72nd street long beach. hopefully i'll run into some members from BWE. thanks in advance! |
Grats on the new ride!
Pay and park at Cabrillo launch ramp. Bait barge is right on the way out to the bouncin grounds. |
I foresee a pilgrimage of people heading north in search of a 48" butt. Good luck, take pics and dont step on George's toes. You should see his profile pics when hes pissed.

Follow jorge he is the darkhorse of cabrillo. :notworthy:
Hurry up before he starts his own guide service. |

lol yes i am in search of the big barn doors and the recent post has really got me fired up. i usually do well on the Los alamitos side (15 butts per hour) but they are all 10-17". i hear tons about how the big butts hang out in cabrillo but i've never ventured that far yet.

Hey man that was me out at Newport out at the mouth of the harbor.have you been out of alamitos bay to the bait barg .thinking o.n trying the fed break wall out that way
|
There's plenty of flatties from 72nd place to Downtown Long Beach. Try launching at Cherry Beach and fishing south along the beach. No need to paddle all the way out to the wall.
A big advantage to Cabrillo is easy access to the bait barge. At Cherry you'd have to make/bring bait or fish plastics, etc. |

If you've never been to Cabrillo and you're not used to paddling in high winds I would stay away or make sure you go out with a partner. Cabrillo sits just around the corner from Portugese Bend, when the afternoon winds pick up they whip around the bend and get can pretty nasty and challenging even in a Hobie. Every so often you will see the lifeguard boats out there when the winds pick up, they're not out there for an evening cruise.

Last couple times I have launched out of Cabrillo, the only place I have launched from, a lifeguard has paddled up to me and let me know about high wind conditions. It as been pretty rough out there at times.

Afternoon wind picks right at 12ish and can blow hard . If you want a sample of the wind , go watch Para-Gliders surfing chop .
