Elusive Legals
Saturday launched for some solo kayak hooping the shallows from 7 pm to
2 am off south La Jolla in foggy conditions, and didn't keep any bugs. The two barely, barely legals in this net went back into the water. Its been tough bugging for me - I feel like packing the gear away until the next warm-water year. Vermillion rockfish carcass in the baitcage, from my limit last weekend. At least the rockfish seem to want to bite. I get one trip a weekend, and usually struggle deciding between going fishing and going hooping! Heavy Hoop - notice the gps under the net, it was "instruments only" navigation out there. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...g102211003.jpg Monster Eel - the clear water surface bump made for some wierd effects! This thing was 10 lbs! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...g102211002.jpg Rockfish from 10/16 http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...t101611001.jpg Photos: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...loud9/Fishing/ Videos: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...hing%20Videos/ . |

Bait
Try a bloody oily bait lik
|
Nice Job.... That eel shot was freaking me out I couldn't figure it out until I read the caption
|
Hey Jim thanks for the great advice - oily bait's certainly best. The carcass in my baitcage was originally packed in solid with mashed sardinesand mackerel, I just throw the carcasses in for 'filler'. I usually toss in salmon skin, salmon carcasses and chopped salmon heads too, when I can get them. So I don't think bait is the issue. I average 100 shorts/night. I'm experimenting with pvc bait tubes and salmon/fish oil as well for less rebaiting work. The La Jolla shorts, eels and parasites (isopods) can eat through 15 lbs of bait in five of these bait cages a night. Yes ... I know, I should branch out to one of the bays here, after all these years, I can't stand getting into a car to go kayaking. For me, it used to be lots of lobster limits out near the kelp here until cold water year 2010, and this summer was pretty cool too. Dunno, guess I just keep missing the crawl. ************************************ I even went out on the Pride the other night hooping, 8 guys got 13 legalsbut I pulled ZERO. Now that, that ... my friends is not just BAD SKILL. : ) We were all rotating through pulling the same 10 nets in 50+ feet of water. This is a great operation, they started this year and its $55/net for 6 - 11 pm daily. Fish count for the Pride: http://www.sportfishingreport.com/pa...hp?boat_id=191 |
Stuck in LA
Larry, Thanks for the report. Sorry about all the shorts. But I gotta tell ya, listening to you crying about living so close to La Jolla, makes me want to cry too... |
Sorry you are stuck in LA Yani --- I was stuck there for 13 years.
But you're from Dana Point! |
Geez, I remember Dana, I lived there
for 30 yrs. But now I'm helping my mom in LA. Setting an example for my kids. Cause when I old and I can't pee thru the scupper holes anymore, my kids are gonna have a hand full whether they like it or not. Let me know when a house in your neighbor goes for sale...:) Then I'll be your problem. |
That is a big eel Larry! I bet he was a handful trying to get him to get out of the net. Sucks that there was a big bug in there to keep him company. But hey the season is long right.

Dang! your a HORSE! That water must be cold! :notworthy: |
I've never been hooping before, but eager to give it a go. How do you get an eel out of your net? Just hook onto the bottom and dump the hole net?
|
Driftwood,
come to Dana and I'll show you more... |
Tough luck on the bugs, but we still admire your rockcod success. You might not have had a big lobster feast, but chowing down on all the rockcod you catch, has got to be great.

Nice catch!!!
