heading for open water
 

hey im new to kayak fishing i have the ocean kayak malibu xl i have taken it in the marinas and on lakes but i want to head for the open water and i was wondering how it is going to handle anybody have any advice.

1. watch some youtube vids of launching thru surf.
2. Check surf report.
3. Leash everything.

Thats what I did and it worked out great. Still seaching for that :wsb: and :yt: though.

All kidding aside.....the first time I launched I sat at the waters edge and watched a few of the vets launch and land. The best advise I can give is to prepare for the worse, leash/tie everything down and store everything until you're in the open and even then you still stand the chance of getting tossed and losing something. I try to make it a habit to keep my deck clean and keep my rods leashed at all times. I have 15+ LJ trips under my belt and I've lost everything from knives to sunblock to a rod n reel that wasn't leashed. Oooh, almost forgot......BRING YOUR RADIO!!!

Jim Sammons has a great class on the basics of kayak fishing in the open ocean, including getting in and out of the surf on your own, safety concerns, where fish might be hiding, techniques, etc. Might be worth a call to him. The wealth of knowledge that he can give you will be money more than well spent!!! And he might even put you on some fish...;).

There is also some Darkhorse guy that supposedly visits these boards now and again, that might know something about fishing in the ocean and be willing to share his knowledge...:rolleyes:.

All good advise but the one that i cant stress enough is........... Lay your rods flat on the deck just encase you roll while learning. How did one guy put it. Tall rods plus roll over = snaped rods.........:doh:

Everytime I see these posts I want to scream. I have only been in this sport a couple of years. I bought my kayak (at that time a WS Ride from Ric when he was in Kearny Mesa OEX) and headed straight to LJ. Besides coronado where I work, it was a very long time before I ventured anywhere else.....LJ has everything.

Save your money on surf lessons and others, spend that on tackle.

If you really think you need lessons, PM me... I won a couple of lessons from Jim S at the last Moyer tourney, I will never use them and will give them to you for free. He can and will teach you if he is not off catching the loch ness monster on light tackle.

Dont hesitate, dont fear the surf, just GO!!!!

Best advice I have seen on this is to strap your rods flat and stow the reels, tie everything down and it does not matter if you are upside down.

Also, Pick a day that the surf is going to be 1-2 or less, time your intervals, paddle hard.

On the way in.....stow everything, time the set, paddle hard, when the inevitable wave looms behind you, drop your feet on either side and back paddle hard, after the wave passes, continue in.

yup, i did that at SaMo. had my rods in the holders, all leashed and snapped a 10ft ML spinner i was going to use just outside the breakers for perch and croaker. sucked. luckily my more expensive and yet shorter (8ft) bait rods were spared.
