There was one off of North Beach yesterday. Todd Mansur found it on a whale watching trip and I know for a fact he knows his fish. I worked for him for 3 summers.

I like how everyone on the boat is screaming & hollering at a little 4-5 footer... like it was going to punch a hole in the side of the boat and start chewing on scuba tanks.

It was actually estimated at 10 feet....that video was shot by the captain from the helm so it appears to be smaller

Yeah, that's what she said...

I went out there Thursday night, dead calm until about 1:15am and then the wind started up. Not much happening that night, a couple of small brown sharks, not sure what they were, a rockfish and a sculpin. Trolled for a couple of hours, mac and mac rapala, nothin. Tried the shore line for hali's, got two raked baits and one of those sharks. I ran into a freind out there when I first started, he said a mako came up and checked out his yak, then took off.

I'm looking for that what-ever it is today. . .

Loading up my yak now, Looking for reasonable wind and I'll paddle to the kelp. I'll bring a camera and a fresh pair of shorts (just in case).

THis just in. . .

On the water by 4pm off by 8 pm. Wind was brutal, swells were frequent and a lot of water moving. But I was not going to waste the opportunity. I hightailed it to the headlands. Trouble making bait, only caught two bait fish.

Started the drift on using a big hammer, I think 4 inch (brown/orange). Must have been a lucky drop, hooked up with a legal halibut. Reeled the MF'r in and reached for the gaff. The bugger just sat there but it had drifted a bit and I had to reach for the gaff shot and holy mother of *(&%)! I missed the gaff shot and the fish b-lined it to the bottom. I wasn't prepared for that, rod in one hand gaff in the other and then "snap". I wish I could re-do that.

There will be no fresh halibut for dinner.

That pretty much took the wind out of that sail. Made for a crappy paddle in.

oh, no tax man.
