Sand in Reel

I got it all taken apart. What's the best way to wash the sand away?

mtnbykr2 07-19-2011 03:58 PM

I had an incident a couple months ago, two Shimanos, I took one apart and the sand was so fine, I washed it with wd 40 relubed and still couldn't
get it to free spool, and not feel like a grinder, I sent them in, I got them back and one blew up in a DP tourney, sent it back and a few weeks later had a new reel, the reel I blew up had alot of time and fishies on it, might be worth it IMO...:reel:

Shimano Cardiff 400A. This thing has so many moving parts, glad I saved the reel diagram or I'd never be able to put it back together.

George do you live in the I.E.? If so, try Kenny's Rod & Reel in Upland. He runs a great shop. If he can't fix it he will let you know and give you your best options.

If you take it to Shimano in Irvine they will fix it or replace it for $25. Their customer service is second to none!

Hey George, quit playing in the sand with it, it ain't a shovel!

I use a spray bottle with water or window cleaner.

had the same problem from my last trip, one(avet) i tore completely down and re-lubed and its good to go, my cardiff 200 is still a little weird, after just rinsing and re-lubed the bearings

i was thinking of getting a small ultrasonic and putting a light solvent in there and soaking the parts after its apart. the vibration and degreaser should take care of it i'd think. then it would be like putting clean like new parts back together??
thoughts on this??

Makes sense Mikey. Let me know how it works.

reel cover

I was worried about all the sand in the water on launch so I had water resistant reel covers made! They cost me aprox. 10$ ea. PM me if you want a set.

When I worked @ a tackle shop we used a mix (1 to 1) of Mineral Spirits , Acetone and Distilled water (outside or in a well ventalated area with gloves & a ventilator & ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING!!!!!!!!!) or find a degreaser, strip all old gear grease off all gears and bearings and housing. Also break down drag washers and thoroughly clean then re-grease (if neccessary).

If you use the above method, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, be EXTREMELY careful using these chemicals and it's not necessary to mix a big batch of the cleansing solution (8oz. should be enough).

Re-build dry (just to see if all parts work) if ok, thoroughly re-grease all gears and oil all bearings. (make sure to grease dog gears.) Don't forget to oil handle spindles and bail rollers.

If the schematic for the reel looks too daunting, send it out to shimano and let them do it. Have heard nothing but good things about their service over the years (also fast turn around).

Hope this helps.

George, what are you gonna do with the 3 left over washers and that spring? :D

jorluivil 07-22-2011 09:54 PM

Better to have leftover parts and not be short.
