Question for you hds 5(x) users.

Which style of transducer did you go with for your hds 5x units.Which 50/200 transducer are you using?? The standard transom mount or the shoot thru hull???? I see a lot of choices that would work??

I'm using the 50/200 transom mount in my Hobie Revo with the HDS-5.... Its really big, I mounted mine with the transom mount brackets and zip ties around the sailing mast, facing backwards (won't fit any other way). I have tested it both ways forward and back, doesn't make a difference and I am just using a couple cups of water put in the hull to make it all work. For me its the best solution.

The shoot through hull I believe is a puck designed to use adhesive, probably smaller and easier if you want to goop/3M it.

I highly recommend a wet install though, it really does make a difference in resolution and detail. This could be done with either ducer. But the transom mount is pretty universal. You can wet install, goop it, put it over the side on a mount, or move it to a real boat.

The rep from Lowrance suggested the 83/200 for "shooting thru the hull", which is the unit I have ordered

I am using the thru hull (cut not shoot) P319-BL from Airmar. I would recommend the 5 over the 5x because there are some really trick ways to use the GPS with those units.

Hows that working out with beach landings and coming in and out of the racks or truck for you. Looks like basically a bulkhead. It worries me with all the flexing of a kayak hull. I do like the gained sensitivity but a big hole in the hull sucks.

The manufacturer says that there is no concern at all for scratches and scrapes from dragging your yak. It only sticks out about 1/8 of an inch or less from the hull. The part of the kayak that is sandwiched in the unit is locked in very rigid. The hole you cut is 2 inches and the head unit and inside nut are about 3 inches. That gives you 1/2 inch of contact all the way around making it very solid and stable.
