I ended up with a pretty nice one a 30" 12.5 pound halibut as measured by the dfg survey guy. Also caught 1 short 2 jumbo sculpin and a couple of sand bass and a mackerel. Bait was awsome! Weather was great, sorry no pics I grabbed the camera and the batteries were dead.....conveniently.....:D

WTG, that will do in a pinch. Got there at the crack of 11:00 after sleeping for 11 hours. Caught 1 lizzard fish and 1 Butt 31 inches, both released. It was tough throwing back the Lizzard. :D

Exactly! I haven't even been fishing for butts lately because of the 50+lbs I've had in the freezer... finally down to about 5lbs left now, it's time to get another hog!

Seriously I try and release everything under 36", but it gets really sketchy with the bigger ones. Depends on how they are hooked really. I've almost rolled or had hook trauma on multiple occasions releasing those bigger ones. I can't count the number of times I've been bit!

What's your secrets on releasing the big butts guys???

StinkyMatt 04-25-2011 01:16 PM

36 incher is going on the wall!

One man's trash is another man's trophy........damn you guys!

I am finding that if I let them tire out they are easier to deal with. But also they seem to get desensitized to the boga the more you touch them with it. So I am not really trying to attach it on the first few attempts. My plastic boga also has a coiled bungee type of strap that allows me to maintain control of the fish without putting pressure on the jaw by holding only that immediately after attachment. The plastic bogas float too, so don't be affraid to completely let go of it if the fish starts thrashing (they seem to calm down quickly with it attached). I won't support the full weight of any Butts over 25 inches or so after having a 28 inchers jaw break. Slide em up and slide em back.

That is the main reason that I release a lot of nice sized fish. After I have fought it, it is only meat to me. But to someone else it could be so much more.
