Yes you can use them as bait. :cheers1: smaller ones work great too

old_rookie 09-10-2010 06:10 PM

Awesome catch Danny!

herefishyfishy! 09-10-2010 06:16 PM

Nice Butt...Did you actually hook the halibut? One time I had one hold on to a small sand bass in the bay all the way to the kayak without having the hook in him. They are frickin mean suckers.

danny 09-10-2010 06:49 PM

somehow he took a big ringed circle right in his mouth, it was funny I would hook the bait in the head and he would bite the tall then I put it in the tail and he took the head off. must have been a few of them in that spot I think it may be time to use the sling.

drunkenmaster 09-10-2010 06:59 PM

sling it up!

herefishyfishy! 09-10-2010 07:28 PM

Nice. Ive been freediving a couple times this past couple weeks just looking around for lobster awaiting the opener. Each time I've seen atleast one halibut sitting in the sandy patches. Next time I will bring a sling. They are definitely around...

bmercury 09-10-2010 11:08 PM

Did you catch the perch or did the butt cough it up? hahaha nice catch.

fish4ever555 09-11-2010 06:52 PM

Very nice fishy. How'd he taste?

danny 09-11-2010 08:40 PM

it was just like chicken. maybe a little better.

Dean Machine 09-12-2010 06:02 AM

danny 09-12-2010 06:38 PM

Probably referring to a Hawaiian sling, for spear fishing.

danny 09-15-2010 03:06 PM

Hawaiian sling, i did it today got two nice ones just sitting there waiting for me. way too many baby sharks and rays.

I remember catching perch & sometimes they have live babies in them. Those babies used to be great bait. Squeeze the belly & they would squirt out

danny 09-15-2010 07:32 PM

I want a halibut that can take a 10'' perch in one bite. The bite off the beach is great right now. Leopard sharks, perch, etc. I can not keep my bait on the hook long enough to get a big butt.

StinkyMatt 09-15-2010 08:16 PM

Danny, looks like you in da zone right now. What beach are you killing them at? Day or night?
