First cast on the megabait...

25# yellow. Snuck out for an afternoon session on the prowler with 2 poles, no bait tank. Launched from a secret spot... a few may recognize.;)

One of the coolest trips ever for me. I really like the video too. Love the song and the feel of the afternoon light.

I would like to figure out how to do that...plus nice job on the plastics!!!

Dam. I wish I could paddle like that. Congrats on a Great catch n the stratigic strike. Did you see boilers or were you just blind casting? Mega baits are great jigs. You can fish the whole water column, fast or slow. They get bit just fluttering down too. And they cast better than about any other lure. Go to on windy days. Keep up the great work. Mike

On birds. Casted, retrieve like half way on the surface, then let it sink again. Hit on the drop. Honestly I think this is the first YT I've caught on one... But had good success offshore w them.

Nicely done! I've always wondered about launching there ... how did the locals react to you paddling out there? It's a pretty mellow spot anyway

Mr. NiceGuy 09-10-2015 07:05 AM

I don't recognize your secret spot. Where is it?

RookieYakker 09-10-2015 07:29 AM

Way cool Chris!! Love those solo sessions, especially afternoon ones.

Love the music. Where did you learn to speed paddle like that???:luxhello:

Haven't been there in a while, but if I am correct I used to live right up the street. If so that launch is in an MPA, is it much of a paddle to get out of it from there. Again I may not have the right location but pretty sure I do.

Jim,

I think your right. I used to fish off my noserider before that area closed. Really fun for fishing and surfing, but haven't fished that area since it closed.
I was wondering how long the paddle was past the prohibited area?

Yep classic old guy long board spot, if the surf was down we just paddled them out to fish.

That is correct Jim. It depends on your heading.... If you go southwest you're out of the reserve in about a mile. If you go due west, it's a lot further. I took kind of an in-between heading till I got below it then worked out the line. And by worked I mean made one cast and headed in lol.

Surf was actually pretty solid. The gopro really flattens it out. But long interval south swell = good lulls between sets. The possibilities are endless when you can launch through surf. And actually being able to lift your yak helps too.

Yes, the southern edge of the reserve is a straight East-West line starting at Diamond St just North of Crystal Pier. I suspect you guys are using some fancy FF maps or apps to navigate those boundaries ? Interesting to know...

I have a very basic GPS device with waypoints and tracks only. So I created this San Diego Marine Protected Areas (MPA) page, with a Google Map and downloadable GPX files with the boundaries to upload on GPS devices. Would be glad if someone could use them besides me.
The GPS coordinates were taken from http://www.dfg.ca.gov/m/MPA/Map
