YT wound?

Did a little Happy hour sesh on the pond tonight. Fun out there. Got a nice yellow on flylined mac. After I gaffed and cut the gills, I noticed this wound on the side of its stomach. I haven't caught it up yet. Its just sitting on ice. I was wondering if anyone had seen this before. If so, do you know what it is? I'm guessing some type of parasite/infection. I'm a bit weary on eating it right now, but again I haven't cut it up and don't know what the meat looks like.

ashmoz 07-01-2015 09:51 PM

Somebody gaffed it before?

FISH11 07-01-2015 09:59 PM

I caught on once before that had an oval mark similar in shape but no puncture marks. It was further back on the fish. On the inside it was fine and just looked like it had healed and was not too much deeper than just the skin. I though it looked like something had tried to take a bite out of it.

Caseym 07-01-2015 10:05 PM

Looks like it's Puss coming out the wound.

Casey 07-02-2015 10:02 AM

vampire?

Looks a little like a lamprey bite, too oval though. Cut that piece out and throw it away. Cook the fish it should be fine.

Fishin Phil 07-02-2015 10:12 AM

Humboldt squid bite.

that was my first thought too. It's too square to be one and looks far too big as well but that could be just how the picture portrays it. We do have them here but I would expect the yellowtail to eat the lamprey once it spots it. It could be an old wound from an escaped gaff. So long as the gaff does not Peirce any major organs I would think most fish if they were healthy to begin with could survive.

steveooo 07-02-2015 10:53 AM

Gross. Ill guess cookie cutter shark.

Ggiannig89 07-02-2015 11:24 AM

Man that's pretty gross!
Probably safe to eat the clean areas but I'd be pretty turned off tryin to eat any of it. :ack2:

Serious? That would be pretty coincidental. It looked fresh. I saw a couple divers right on the edge of the kelp as I was paddling out around 5pm. Can't believe he would still be charging bait after being shot in the stomach... Tough sons of bitches.

Fishin Phil 07-02-2015 04:41 PM

Tony did it. He forgot his snacks so he settled for some.

His last meal. Fishaside.

Nobody guessed it. I just cut it up and this is what I saw. This thing was attached to its stomach. Gnarly. Now does anyone know what the hell it is? The meat looked perfect though.... Have a lot of people to feed on Saturday. Might it be good cooked? Freeze first? Any thoughts?

Irishman 07-02-2015 07:09 PM

I'd err on the side of caution on that one. Looks like a wound with internal parasite that grew big. My opinion is that the meat is infected, small parasites you can't see are the ones that can ruin your GI tract.

Big Wave Dave 07-02-2015 08:13 PM

I think it's an alien.

Does anyone know what this is? I got a YT with the same thing in its belly minus the external sore. It's tubular and was not moving...can't find anything on the net other than this post a year ago. No one identified what it is....meat looks fine but not sure if there are microscopic parasites. Love my sushi but hesitant.

TJones 04-17-2016 04:58 PM

Ohh Hell

I thought that was his bladder and just tossed it aside and kept eating.:dontknow:

broncobilly 04-17-2016 06:05 PM

U shouldn't eat it, I'll be happy to dispose of the meat for ya. Just put it on ice and I'll come pick it up.
Jk.
It's a fat body. Normal in fish. Not a parasite.

Pocoloco 04-17-2016 06:39 PM

pingpangdang 04-17-2016 08:21 PM

Thx to taggermike. ...pyloric ceca...learned something new today. It's normal.

Aaron&Julie 04-17-2016 09:58 PM

No matter what it really is, I'd have cut away that area for sure, and then some. I would have frozen before eating it too. CA law requires all served raw fish in restuarants first be frozen, before being allowed to be served.

chris138 04-18-2016 07:25 AM

Dos ballenas please reply lol. Doesn't look like a gaff wound. My guess would be lamprey or raymora

steve999 04-18-2016 08:29 AM

You didn't turn your back on that thing, did you? You know some of those guys crawled off the table and are now hiding under your bed.

dos ballenas 04-18-2016 08:42 AM

Yeah that is the digestive gland.... every yellowtail has one.

Doubt it was from a cookie cutter.... you really only see cookie cutter wounds on larger pelagic fish that frequent more tropical waters.... like swordfish and opah.

Def not a remora....

Def not lamprey as they live mostly in coastal and fresh waters

The wound could have come from many things. Hard to say. Yellowtail are tough fish and survive all kinds of wounds and battles.

Sully1 04-18-2016 10:49 AM

Scar tissue from an old gaff wound.

RK 04-18-2016 11:14 AM

You're all wrong its a mexican yellowtail tuna snapperfish that partied at Adelitas all weekend, typical.

Vikingj 04-18-2016 01:25 PM

The internal organ with the worm-like structures is the pyloric caecum (not parasites). A normal part of the digestive system attached to the stomach. I wouldn't hesitate to eat fish but if you are doubtful, freezing and/or cooking kills almost all parasites.

Mr. NiceGuy 04-18-2016 05:21 PM

Poor fishy.

Why take chances or gross yourself out?

Give the poor guy a respectful send off to the afterlife, and catch another healthy fish for your dinner table.

Just looking at the pictures kills my appetite. I think I'll make a margarita and give this thread a rest.

MITCHELL 04-24-2016 02:47 AM

I say....

Cook well done...you can't kill it til ya grill it....

Slug 04-24-2016 07:08 AM

I appreciate the advice guys but this post was from last summer. Still don't know what it was. I did grill it and had no problems.

acorad 04-24-2016 04:55 PM

Pretty conclusively pyloric caecum, iow, a natural - edible even, if you didn't have to look at it - part of a fish, as reported above.
