Video of Kayak accident
I was out diving the other night and at the end of my dive I ran into Tony of Team Sewer. Tony had just rolled his kayak and was in the water. He provided the details of the mishap in another thread. I happened to have my GoPro running and wanted to share the video. I hope Tony doesn't mind me sharing as I thought it could be helpful for promoting kayaking safety:

Ow wow you have the video?!
|
BWE is an awesome community full of terrific people. :you_rock:
|
Wow that is some crazy footage. Glad everything turned out well.
|
Thanks for the share
|
Wow.
|
It's great to have a video that shows what Tony explained it his thread. People need to take heed because as you see, it is so much harder in the dark. If you go out alone and have a similar problem, you provably are not coming back. Practice all aspects of self rescue and carry extra safety gear and wear a PDF. Good thing everything came out OK. The missing or damaged gear can be replaced, your life is something else. Thanks for sharing this video, it will save some lives.

crazy chit can happen out there. the buddy system is the best option.
|
Man I wouldn't have gone out in the in a million years. Props for lending a hand. Glad tony and you are safe. Karma jackpot
|
Tony has a Guardian Angel and his name is Rick.
|
Well done guys, being prepaired, pre planning paid off and saved the night.
|
Glad you are OK, but I'm having trouble seeing the how the risk is worth it...especially after hearing about some divers dying this last week.

All I can say is Rick is a HERO!!!!! and then sum! You just saved me $200 as well, I was thinking of getting one of the auto inflating PFDs....after watching that eat you alive....better stick with what I have now.
That was a struggle......and a blessing in surprise. Now you have been....UN Rick Rolled! |
Wow, the tankwell was filled with water, scupper holes blocked , not draining.
Water leak inside the haul , bad x 2... I will suggest buy some air bladders to fill major cavities underdeck that is not being used. http://www.nrs.com/category/3049/kay...ring/flotation. Nice to have a Guardian Angel around, but just in case he is busy , the air bladder can do great help. :) |
God is good
OMG GOD is good AND put Rick there to help at the perfect time...glad it had a good end to the story...
|
This video should be Stickied...
How many times has each of us gone out in low light, marginal conditions alone or fished away from partners?
Thank GOD the water was warm, there were people around, and it was successful. Good job keeping calm and working the problem.... That was sobering |
And my blood pressure just shot up while watching that. Awesome that you were able to help... think we all need more practice.
|
Ricks the man! But I didn't even see his name come up in the other post???
|
Credit was definitely due for that one

Yes rick deserves credit for standing by... I give rick credit for coming over and trying to help out where he could, he stood by and helped out with holding onto my pfd and waders. The fact is he did not save my life.... he didn't have to, but he could have if I was in serious trouble. The fact is "I" righted my kayak, an "I" climbed back on. Let's not forget Jorge was there too. What saved me is simply being prepared. Having the right tools in the right place and having trained myself for just such a situation. Like Jorge said there are no heros here, everybody did what they were supposed to do, and stood by ready to help if needed. |
The inflated vest made it look like you were choking out but if you only listen to the video, you were handling it pretty darn well.
When I saw Jorge in the background (2:03) with that gaff in his hand...I knew you weren't going to die. Makes me wonder if he regrets not having the chance to stick...er...save you with it...Jim |
Tony, good thing you were prepared. George,
good thing you were on standby. Rick, thanks for helping our buddy Tony, and being prepared to save his life.:notworthy: |
that yak was seriously full of water. it doesn't take long, once the yak ( PA) is flipped, its full.
i hope i have a rick around if i ever flip again. keep cool, don't panic and..... catch bugs :D |
That was gnarly
|
All that matters at the end of the day is no one got hurt! Yakking is not as safe as watching TV at home, but we all know that and accept the risks.
I just have to say its awesome that whoever was there was willing to help another yakker, whether or not he needed help. WE rock as a collective brotherhood and we know it, Congrats to all for being part of a corrected problem and positive outcome! You all rock! :you_rock::you_rock::you_rock::you_rock::you_rock: |
Cool video, didn't look that choppy really. Awesome of you to hop in the water to help out. Glad everyone stayed calm.
|
damn that was intense. glad you're okay.

That's a great rescue video for the 'typical' kayak but for those that have PA's the video is worthless..........no pun intended. PA's are not your typical kayak and that's one of the reasons Tony's PA ladder is a must, side mounting a PA isn't impossible but I can assure you that it's not easy. The most important thing is to know your kayak; how it reacts in mixed swells, its tipping point, how to upright it, how to mount it, etc. I'm in the process of making my own PA ladder, I've seen Tony use it in both flat and very choppy conditions and I can assure you that it works 110% better than mounting the PA sideways. Also, because the PA is very wide trying a upright it using the same process in the video is virtually impossible, that is unless you have something tied to one of the side rails that will help you pull it over. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...o/DSCN6408.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...o/DSCN6409.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-c...o/DSCN6410.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-g...o/DSCN6411.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...o/DSCN6412.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O...o/DSCN6413.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...o/DSCN6414.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/DSCN6415.JPG |
What does 110% mean?

jorge... you crack me up... :cheers1:
|
That's too close to call for me. What else you got
|
Guys, take a good look at the rails on some of the new Hobies for 2015.....The stearn ladders might just save your lives. Much harder to reenter these WIDE boats with a longer rail. Maybe on your sea trial before you buy you should tryout reentry in shallow water. That ladder is important, learn how to use it. It should be your best friend.
|
I don't own a PA but plenty of vids around, it doesn't look that tough. You don't need a ladder, just climb on the back. You can reenter from the side like normal. If it's so choppy out that you flipped your yak, it's probably a good bet that you'll fall off/flip again from trying to stand up on the thing from a rear reentry in rough water. You don't need a rope to flip it upright, just grab the masts and pull it over or climb on top while its upside down and flip it. Use the waves to help you flip it. It's going to have water inside after a flip.
