Thats 174 days away, plenty of time to plan and get ready.

6 Weight Redington Rod / Lamson Litespeed Reel - Check

8 Weight Custom Boron Graphite Rod / Hardy DD Reel - Check

Heck, even the 10 Weight Kunnan Rod / Redington AL Reel - Check

Large Tackle Box full of fly tying materials - Check

I have other 6 and 8 weight rods that need reels. By October I can have them rigged for someone to borrow if they want to join in and try this...

Now to order some of those cool Fish Skull components that Fishing MD is using and get to tying...

ATTENTION GUESTS for you to ride the BAJA EXPRESS all you need do is join BWE, only takes a minute of your time to JOIN our COMMINITY and Welcome Aboard.

The BAJA EXPRESS FLYS for the 1st time.

18-25 OCTOBER it is. GONZAGA on the FLY!!! We will plan on bringing an extra table and a couple 3 vices to be used evenings to play with the flys. This should give us 6 great days and one afternoon session. Kai, thank you for your inspiration in setting this up. Been considering this since we meet at Tidelands, so this trip is for YOU!

If you sign up for this trip and cancel, someone else might not get to go, so..........

Kai, you are #1 and I will take 5 more FLY FISHING PEOPLE, plus 2 on standby.
First come first served. If this trip goes as well as I think it might, it will be repeated again next year in the spring. Each angler will be responsible for one days meals. We will all be responsible for our water, drinks and ice. Should be less waste this way. ONLY money will be $5.00 each to pay for our toilet flushing and shower water.

We might try contacting a couple Fly Shops or suppliers and see if they have something they would like to have BAJA TESTED, and maybe someone will donate a PRIZE for the biggest FLY caught fish landed.

Gentlemen, start your planning NOW. Posts need to be done here to JOIN this trip. Tight lines and bloody gaffs. All aboard the BAJA EXPRESS.
Kai is #1 on the list
Mike is #2
Brandon is #3
Makobob is #4
EOD is #5
1 spot left plus 2 backups.

Welcome aboard Mike.
And then there were TWO. This will be an epic trip, to an area that sees very few fly fisherman. Might be able to set up a trip to our island. Get a panga to deliver us to and bring us back. San Luis island is 5 miles from our beach and never sees fly fishermen.

makobob 04-30-2014 08:00 AM

Kai, Mike, and Makobob are in for this trip. A couple of others have contacted me as possibles. 5 and a half months to go. Lot's of time to get it together. Each person will bring and prepair food for one day for everyone. This will keep costs and food waste down. We will have a get together about a month before the trip to final plan. This trip is for those who want to fish the FLY. Yes you can bring other gear. There are miles of shallow rubble reefs we can fish here at Las Encantadas.

For you non members of BWE who monitor this site, if YOU want to come on one of these trips, take the time to JOIN BWE, then post your desires.

Kai, Mike and myself are going FLYFISHING 18-25 October to the Gonzaga Bay area. I expect us all to be whipped puppies. We will mostly be fishing from 0-25 feet depths, triggers, bass, grouper, YT, snapper, corvina, WSB, barracuda, and sierra, along with other exotics are all available this time of year. Have even seen rooster fish and dorado down here. I would suggest at least 2 fly rods and reels 5-10 wt with sinking lines. One or more bass outfit and a heavier outfit incase the big boys show up. The weather is usually GREAT this time of year, the winds are down and the water temps should be up. THIS could be your TRIP of a LIFETIME, and it is less than 6 hours from San Diego. Again we plan to caravan, so if interested please contact me. There is room for 3-4 more fishermen. Sharing the fuel cost between two the trip should cost us each about $300 or less, +++ tackle. Tight Lines. EXPECT fish in the 2-20 pound plus range.

I have room to take one passerger and their yak and gear in my truck, fuel for this trip should be less than $250 so your share would be less than $125.

UPDATE

Gonzaga on the FLY is now 95 days away. MESSAGE from battleborn, I am trying to figure out how to make that work. As it stands right now I would have to drive down the 22 and would leave with you guys on the 25. Not sure if you would have the room. U have no Idea how bad I want to hit it with my 8wt. thanks again. Is jeff going on this trip?

Yes there is room for you. Jeff has not mentioned anything to me yet.

Battleborn possible

You too could join this trip. According to the book Baja Catch, these fish are normally VERY active this time of year.

Spotted Bay Bass
Trigger Fish
Corvina
Cabrilla
Yellowtail
Barracuda
Leopard Grouper
Pompano
Sierra
Pargo
DORADO, this is the month when YOU might get one on the FLY.

I have room in my truck for one person with gear and their yak. For you light tackle guys this could be the trip of a lifetime. Plan to fish both Las Encantadas AND Gonzaga, from my place to Willard is 9 miles by water. There should not be much wind this time of year and the water will be at it's warmest, that is why the dorado show up then. GONZAGA ON THE FLY!!!

makobob 08-02-2014 10:03 AM

I really want to go down with you guys in late October. I have just never fly fished before and have zero fly gear. Count me in. I'll have no problem getting the time off by October.

The above was sent this morning by yakDout aka Brandon. That makes 4 so far for this trip. There will be a couple extra fly rods available, we will be tying flies in the evenings if needed. Please remember to bring bass tackle and a heavy rod just in case the BIG boys show up.

There is still room for a couple more to join in on this trip, welcome aboard Brandon. Tight lines.

makobob 08-10-2014 01:30 PM

And now EOD has signed on for this trip, so we are down to one spot left and 2 backups. Gonzaga on the FLY this should be an awesome trip.

Getting closer, 65 days just a couple months before we head out for Gonzaga. Almost no one has fished this for the last couple months, it has been too hot. Air temps for this trip should be cooler while water temps are up. Still room for one or two.

This is going to be a special trip. Most of us will be using FLY RODS and BASS RODS.
Kai, Mike, Brandon, M. Bob, Steve, and Sven are on board. After the Sept trip, I have decided to allow another 2 people to join this trip. So this post will act as the LAST CALL.

SPOILER ALERT. 42 lb ROOSTER FISH
caught at Gonzaga on our September trip. Yep our big fish was a rooster caught on a Candy Bar from Squidco.

You might not want to miss this one.

Planning

32 days and counting. Meal planning for this trip. I will do a hot breakfast two mornings, we bring our own breakfasts and lunches the rest of the time along with snacks. You will need at least a gallon of water every day for drinking, plus juices, gatorades, coffee and sodas and beer. Look like the temps will still be up there. I made a pineapple upside down cake on the last trip in a dutch oven, so I might try a dessert again one night.

18th, Saturday Cold Fried Chicken, potatoe or pasta salad, baked bean
Provided by Makobob

19th, Sunday Dinner by Brandon
20th, Monday Dinner by Steve
21st, Tuesday Dinner by Mike
22nd, Wednesday Dinner by Kai
23rd, Thursday Dinner by Sven
24th, Friday Dinner by Makobob
25th, Saturday Dinner AT HOME or on the ROAD.

We have one extra person who will be dinning with us on this trip. Please welcome aboard, Handsome, Sven's dad. So when it is your turn to cook it will be for yourself and 6 more. If you want to switch dinner with someone else it is up to you guys.
On Friday the last night in camp I will do a Shrimp or clam Alfredo pasta in garlic sauce. Please post your dinner so others do not duplicate. If you freeze your meats well they should last till cooking time, if you stay out of the cooler. Remember you could cook fish for all, IF YOU can LAND them. This last trip one 15 lb cabrilla feed us all for a day and a 8 lb corvina made tacos for a day, in fact we never ate trigger fish on that trp, no civiche was made. We will all pitch in on cleanup.
We have two coleman stoves and two BBQ grills for cooking. Any questions just ask. Thanks, BTW If you want a camp fire we have very little wood, last trip it was TOO HOT for a fire as even at night it never got below 80 degrees.

Have to alter my tri tip roast to BRATS. Last year when we went through the border and they did a mandatory check in our vehicle, they found large amount of beef (tri tip) and told us they were going to take it from us. $20 bill got us out of it, but I don't need the hassle.

makobob 10-04-2014 06:52 PM

BRATS are great! Looks like ROBMONEY an I will be visiting Gonzaga again NEXT weekend and I will post one last time before OUR trip. Tight lines.

makobob 10-14-2014 10:20 AM

NEXT Saturday morning we LEAVE for Gonzaga, 18 Oct. Just got back last night.
Baja is GREEN, never saw as much bright green, been some rain in last 3 weeks and you can really tell it. Rain means GREEN and BUGS! long pants, long sleeve shirts, sun block, bug spray, and itch cream.

On thursday neighbor caught 20 lb Rooster on crock FROM beach. Next cast he got spooled. Roosters and corvina were still on beach this weekend. HOWEVER air and water temps are dropping. EXPECTED for our trip: water 75-low 80's. Air temps mid 80's day and mid to high 60's at night. Winds 3-8 mph. Last weekend we never saw it over 5 mph. LOW winds means MORE BUGS, flies and no see ums.

WE will report after this trip, someone is bringing a Go Pro 4. Later guys, tight lines.

eod 01-18-2015 07:21 PM

I'm already counting the days, can't wait
thanks for the invite Bob
