Jig stick Reel

Hey guys looking for a jig stick reel again and im leaning towards the saltist 35h bg or the sliver in the equivalent size. Also the Newell 332. I am confused on what all the 332-5 p-332 etc. i, correct me if im wrong think 5 stands for gear ratio. I just want a reel i can cast nicely and will hold up. I know both of these reels are solid but want to know what makes one better than the other is anything. most likely 65lb braid with a 40lb mono topshot on a 9' stick

I have a Saltist 40h that is awesome, sweet freespool (could be better) and gorgeous drag.

CDFisher 03-11-2014 06:12 AM

I have a saltist 30 bg and love it.
And just sold my avet mxj to buy
The bg20. I've never had any problems
With the 30 and I'm sure it will be the same
With the 20

If you are fishing braid, I would stay away from the Newell. Since you are fishing braid, I would recommend a narrow reel, it is easier to keep the line flat when winding. The BG's are awesome, as are the seagates and even sealines. The sealines will have the best free spool, but don't have a narrow option, don't have a forward gearbox and click when winding. I have heard good things about the Penn Fathoms as well. IMO, it is hard to beat the saltist for a jig stick reel on a kayak.

Fishwhisperer619 03-11-2014 07:17 AM

Never really been a fan of diawa but a buddy let me use his saltist and I'm a believer now. Very smooth. Prior to that I would use the trinidad 16N which is the narrow model.

William Novotny 03-11-2014 08:41 AM

For our application I'm sold on the sealine series. The perform like a reel in a much higher price class and are durable. And God forbid the inevitable flip occurs and gear is lost you don't need a second mortgage to replace them. I own a 20 30 and 40. Word of advice, when tightening the clamp on a jigstick, don't over tighten. The graphite frame can torque and disengage the gears

30lbbg2299 03-11-2014 09:07 PM

i have casted the saltist 50 silver and like it but the size of that is too big that why i would prefer a smaller reel 35-40. I also like the torium 16 where does that weigh in

Smthtnnr 03-12-2014 08:02 AM

Torium 16 isn't bad, saltist is definitely better though. Much smoother drag. As to the sealine, not a big fan. The reel feels pretty weak and I have had problems when putting it in gear and the drag instantly loosening. I would just spend the extra $60

I warped the spool on my BG 30 using it for yoyo with yellows and amber jack. 50lb braid, 40lb floro and 12lbs of drag...maybe more sometimes lol.

I like the 40 for surface irons though.

lowprofile 03-12-2014 03:31 PM

I picked up a second silver saltist 40 for around $100 off craigslist and a sealine 50 for $80.

RobFish 03-12-2014 03:35 PM

Another vote for the Saltist 40.

Siebler 03-12-2014 03:57 PM

I personally throw a Newell 338 with 40lb Mono but the sealines are good reels for sure. Hook and handed a lot of yellows on them. Solid reels.

Iceman 03-12-2014 04:10 PM

jacked up my Saltist so put the NOISY 338 back on, great for tossing the Go Pro! :D

Geez, I love all the options with these GoPros...sweet shot.

That's one way to get an arial shot when you don't have a quad-copter. Cool picture.

Maybe a Daiwa Seagate 35h?

Talked to the guys at squidco today and they recommended the seagate. Gonna check into that a bit more and probably go with that I have casted it before and like it.

What were the reasons for them recommending a seagate over a saltist?

Maybe they are trying to unload their old inventory.

Most of the searches I have found is that the saltist BG is more desired than the seagate.

YakDout 03-14-2014 06:47 PM

Saltist is definitely not in the same class as seagate. And you probably want the narrow spool 35h for a jig stick.

Fishwhisperer619 03-14-2014 07:13 PM

Caught some quality yellows with my trinidad 16N throwing irons

Are you saying that the seagate is a higher class of reel than the saltist BG?

Nah, opposite.

YakDout 03-14-2014 07:48 PM

Owned plenty of both, would never buy a seagate over saltist again. I would just wait til I saved another 50 bucks for the well worth upgrade.

roby 03-14-2014 08:48 PM

I own several daiwa saltist BG reels. I like em a lot. They are definitely better than the seagates in many ways. There is one area the Seagate beats the saltist though and that is in weight. This difference can be big if you are making a lot casts from a kayak.

Check both out and see which one feels best in your hand.

Here are the weight specs

Seagate 20H 14.3 Saltist 16.5
30H 15.0 17.2
35H 20.4 21.1
40H 21.3 22.0
50H 21.9 22.7

It seems like the 20 and 30H models have a variance of up to 2.2 ounces.
The 35H, 40 and 50 have less than an ounce difference.

It doesn't really seem that much lighter to me but maybe it will feel different?

To me it seems like paying 50 dollars more over the life of a reel is not that much especially if the quality is much better and if you own it for many years.

gunghosd 03-14-2014 10:49 PM

Shimano Tranx

In my opinion the Shimano Tranx is easily the best jig stick reel....power for days, smooth as hell and easy to cast over and over and over.....good luck:)

I prefer narrow spool reels :jig:. I use a Newell 322 (Rare) or a Converted Penn 99 or 112 Tiburon for 25-30# mono and I bought a Trinidad 16N for Braid w/topshot.
Just my .02

Always the innovator :notworthy:

30lbbg2299 03-16-2014 04:57 PM

yeah yesterday i got a 22lb yellows on the iron with the 50 silver. Its not mine and is in my opinion a little too wide for my liking but i love how it casted and i think i will just drop down a size or two from that and go with the 40 or 35. the guys were comparing the segates to the newells and said in his opinion he would go with the segate but the saltist is obviously a better reel.

Smthtnnr 03-16-2014 09:59 PM

Better not be at LJ

I'm assuming you got that fish at the Coronados?

30lbbg2299 03-17-2014 04:34 PM

Yeah i was fishing the yo yo most of the day like everyone else hooked up first drop and seal took him so i had to snap him off. They cam up to splash around on the surface for a minute and i swam my candy bar right through the center of a bird school and got tight. Landed him 10-15 minures later after thinking we were gonna get him at 7 min when we saw deep color then gave me a few more minutes of fight. sick Like the saltist pm me if you have one your are looking to sell. Im 15 so price is my main issue but will most likely be able to arrange something.
