I may have to join you for this one. My birthday is April 20th and I should just take the week off.

619-SWIM-DOG 09-22-2013 05:07 PM

Sounds great to me. Depending on a school I have to go for work. Ill be down to go.

buddha 09-22-2013 05:20 PM

Have they completed the paved road from San Felipe to Gonzaga Bay?

rossman 09-22-2013 05:40 PM

As of mid May this year, it was completed to within 3 miles of the main intersection of Bahia Gonzaga. I have been told that it is completed even further now. I'm going down in mid Oct so I'll have a better update after that

walrus 09-22-2013 09:20 PM

I'm interested in this one, I have one Friday & Saturday in that month which may present problems. If I can work it out, I'm in.

beef78 09-23-2013 07:41 AM

I think that would be an awesome trip! If I am still stationed in San Diego and can get the time off, I would love to do a trip like that.

makobob 10-11-2013 11:01 AM

Welcome aboard Wally and his friend John! Bass, Corvina, Leopard Grouper, Snapper, WSB, plus who knows what! Should be fun. Lot's of time for anyone to join these trips. Baja or Bust 2014. Tight lines and bloody gaffs

captnblood34 10-12-2013 06:04 AM

This will depend on work, I'm sure more details will pop as the trip draws nearer. I'm down, but a good portion of us here can't plan farther than a week in advance, sometimes not even that. Sound like a great time!

When you cannot plan for a trip ahead of time it means you are working too hard, or in the military. When you work hard, you need to play hard!!! Tight lines.

619-SWIM-DOG 10-13-2013 05:38 PM

Ill try and make this trip.. I have training in Yorktown I might have to hit up around that time, so I won't know till a month out. I am looking forward to next months trip down there.

makobob 10-14-2013 03:58 PM

Welcome aboard 619-SWIM-DOG! Glad to have you with us, this is one of my favorite trips! We will have a get together about a month ahead of time, and I will up date everyone often.

makobob 12-09-2013 06:50 AM

Ok guys you are down to 4 months, start your planing now. You do not want to miss this one. Best time for Gonzaga, all are welcome. Post or pm. Thanks.
Tight lines and bloody gaffs. Make 2014 your year to BAJA or BUST.

ful-rac 12-09-2013 07:39 AM

I'd love to get in on this trip, I'll probably be able to make it but, I'm not going to say yes unless it's for sure. I guess the fishing there can be pretty insane...I like insane...

Fishwhisperer619 12-09-2013 07:49 AM

Its times like these where I really hate playing college baseball. I graduate this year so hopefully you guys keep these trips going for the years to come

buddha 12-09-2013 08:01 AM

I have read that there are a lot of gill netters in the area.

I hope that doesn't ruin the fishing for years to come.

Last year I was surprised that we were told that the bay is closed to commercial fishing in the Spring. There were no gill nets or pangas, couple years prior there were both present.

Gill netters were inside the bay and bottom trawlers just outside the bay in October when I was there. Mexico has I believe the proper laws in place to manage this situation but the enforcement is very spotty.

SDROB 12-09-2013 08:45 AM

I just came back from there 2 weeks ago and stayed at Campo La Poma there were 2 commercial boats with nets there working the area pretty tough.

Looked like there was a lot of fishy areas around the smaller Islands thou and plenty of open ocean. We had all the trigger fish and Cabrilla we wanted from shore.(all catch and release) I would of took my Yak but had know idea I would be staying at such an awesome place. I bet it was loaded with halibut.

As soon as I get the footage from my friends camera Ill post some pics of this area. Im gonna try and get in on this trip. I more than likely have a beach house we can stay at if so and we can launch right from the house with 2 islands in paddling/peddling distance.

makobob 12-09-2013 08:46 AM

North of Gonzaga is Punta Bufeo and Las Encantada islands. Way too many rocks to catch their nets to be gill netted. White sea bass, grouper over 100lbs, cabrilla, corvina, snapper, triggers, spotties and totuaba which are illegal to keep. That 20-25 mile stretch is very productive for kayakers. If you ever go, I guarantee you will come back. Happy Holidays.

SDROB 12-20-2013 10:12 PM

Still working on getting these days off to make this trip for Baja or Bust but if I do I might be able to bring my friend who has a house right on the beach at Campo La Poma and we might be able to camp there as well.

It has a few Islands in kayaking distance depending where you launch and if the weather is good. Here is some footage that I have of my trip where Im talking about.

The video was a summary of our trip that I did for my friends but all of the "beach footage" is Gonzaga Bay where I'm talking about, although we did take a Panga in "Bay of La" for one day that is mixed in the video but the whole Jeep Ride and House is where Im talking about. If your on the fence about this trip Gonzaga Bay looks like the real deal! Check it out...

GOING

I've cleared my calendar and I plan on going on this trip. Always wanted to fish this area

buddha 12-21-2013 01:49 PM

I may also go on this trip if I can get a replacement tennis pro that week.

How long does it take to get down there?

svendawg 12-21-2013 02:16 PM

I think rossman was down there in October 2013. He can tell use all about the area on our trip next week

taggermike 12-24-2013 12:53 PM

Gonzaga Bay is an amazing place. I can't confirm but I'll start checking dates. Do you have any preferred dates and how long are you vatos planning to stay? In April you're still at the mercy of the nasty north east winds. There are nice days in between but you can loose some serious fishing time sitting on the beach getting blasted by flying sand. Mike

makobob 12-24-2013 01:54 PM

The dates were set for Ckallidays birthday, but I might start a few days early and stay a few days longer.

makobob 01-07-2014 11:55 AM

BUMP,

Asuncion is over, it was NOT a BUST. Next is GONZAGA!!!!!!!
Three months from now, some members from BWE will make the drive down Mex Highway 5 to Gonzaga. Might be beach camping, or might have a house to stay in. Should be another great trip. Join us if you can. Tight lines and bloody gaffs.

Was it an accident that the abbreviation for "Baja or Bust" is BOB, and you're..BOB?

Fishtales ARE mermaids!!! and mermaids are allowed anywhere. Yes anyone can come. This is planned for the 14-21 April. Some will come a few days early and stay a few days later. As we get closer we can plan out who wants to travel together in a group. It should be an easy 8 hour drive from San Diego. Welcome to the addiction, tight lines and bloody gaffs.

Ok I am getting ready for this trip as I am going to buy this tent cot for camping.

http://store.kamprite.com/catalog/Ka...t-p-16146.html

I am still looking for a source for megabaits/luna/p line laser minnows if anyone has an inexpensive link to buy them.

Looking forward to Gonzaga Bay as I have never been on the Sea of Cortez side.

I read somewhere that condensation on the inside of the kamprite was an issue(with the rain fly on) .....but in the past I read nothing but a bunch of awesomeness. Please, report back with your review.

I suppose you don't have to put the rain fly on.

When does it ever rain here or in baja?:D

ful-rac 01-10-2014 10:40 AM

I'd be more worried about the wind not only blowing your tent away...but also the sand, dirt and dust that's going to be sifted by the screens on your tent...that turns the dirt into the consistency of fine powdered sugar.... and buries you and all your camping gear...!

I gotta git me a new tent!

But does this not happen with EVERY tent on the market? If not WHY? BTW 29 March to 6 April, I may be going with a friend to Gonzaga to PRE-FISH the area.
Might open this to others as part of Baja or Bust also. Will know more in about a week. Tight lines and bloody gaffs.

I think the Kamp Rite tent cot will be fine. I doubt it will blow away since I am lying on it in a cot.

Closing up the windows should be good enough for the sand blowing?

What kind of tent are you looking to buy?
