Crazy question.

Has anyone ever kayaked from dana point to catalina?

todd one 09-01-2013 07:22 PM

I use to work with a guy that raced kayaks. His team would take a boat over and race the kayaks back.

jorluivil 09-01-2013 07:36 PM

I met a guy at cabrillo that said he and his brother kayaked to Catalina and came back via the Marina del Rey flyer. If I remember correctly he said it took something like 8hrs to get there.

lowprofile 09-01-2013 07:41 PM

i'd go with you if i were there. i posted up about it a couple times with no takers and alot of "what if" comments.

if not for the fishing, just for the ride would be awesome!

Sdspeed 09-01-2013 08:06 PM

What? appox. 22 miles each way?
8 hours if the conditions were right would work, strong legs or healthy arms!

easyday 09-01-2013 08:12 PM

I think I wanna try it

Deffinately not going to do it in my xfactor though. I need to start seriously training if I wanna do this.

lowprofile 09-01-2013 08:45 PM

22 miles isn't bad but it can kick up out there. nothing a sit on top can't handle though. ya, you might get dumped but it happens to everyone.

i'd say go for it. We did a trip that was around 25 miles on saturday with no issues. 5 hobies and 3 paddle yaks made the trip.

alanw 09-01-2013 09:57 PM

Wow what a paddle that would be. Definitely gonna need GPS and a gel seat. I don't think I'd want to push water on a stealth for that distance.

PE.rider 09-01-2013 11:29 PM

I would attach a sail and let the winds take me there while sipping a nice beverage :D

Also, the following is a nice article on someone else's experience...

A group of guys from Fastlane did it in adventure kayaks with sails and camped and fished over there -

Years ago a kayaker, Ed Gillette, left California and kayaked to HAWAII, alone and unassisted. That was an epic trip!

Linglifter 09-02-2013 09:00 AM

I would do it in my hobie. We used to go out 7 miles one way up north for halibut. How would we get back?

JarrodMc 09-15-2013 07:53 AM

I'm down. when are we going?

Sounds like fun, Bob, I'm in with the AI's. I'll be coming from Costa Rica, so we will have to determine a meeting point/coordinates somewhere beyond halfway. If I can catch the front of a tropical storm/hurricane down here, I probably could beat you there.:luxhello:

Ed was in his late 20's or early 30's. At 65 I don't think so! Could not even sail downwind to CR at my age. Do they fly yaks to CR?

I don't know. I've never seen one with wings before. Wonder if the mirage drive could be modified. ;)

No, the airlines are really getting strict on weight/size limits. It would have to be a much shorter yak than the AI. There is a dealer in Panama City, closest one, who I've ordered thru. But I've got a brand new Revo 13 with my AI in CR upon my return, your more than welcome to use, would be fun. I'll pm you later with details.:reeling:

We're gonna need a bigger boat

Drake 09-15-2013 05:08 PM

I have put 20+ miles on my kayak in one day, according to the Lowrance Odometer. I was out for over 14 hours, sunrise to sunset. It's doable pending weather conditions are right

paddle man 09-15-2013 05:34 PM

RAN INTO SOME GUYS IN HIGH PERFORMANCE YAKS SAID IT TOOK THEM 6 HRS

Tell the truth, out of 14 hours you were only peddling, what maybe half of that time? The rest of that time you were fishing. Had you peddled 14 hours straight you should have done 30+ miles. That is only 2 mph and you could probabally average over 3.

Yeah that sounds about right. Crusing speed of a PA with calm winds and swell is about 2.5-3.0 without roasting your legs, you can easily do 5.5-6.0 sprints but that only lasts a few minutes.

easyday 09-15-2013 09:27 PM

Im down for this. Like I said I do want to do this in the future. Hmmm troll a big rapala on the way.:D

Siebler 09-16-2013 09:21 AM

Id start with doing the Bay to Bay paddle as a warm up then do Cat crossing.

If you decide to start training and want to do it though i would be in as soon as I replace my 160 that I sold.

easyday 09-16-2013 11:25 AM

Yea I d deff want to do it in a tarpon or something similar my x factor would be a bit slow

addicted2sp33d 09-16-2013 11:50 AM

I'm gonna need a faster boat than my Blue Battleship Cobra FnD.

LawDog 09-17-2013 07:50 AM

I've been wanting to do a trip out there but wasn't sure if it was realistic. I figured the hardest part was finding a few guys who were just as crazy as me. Keep me I. The loop if something comes of this.

Hondatom 09-19-2013 08:25 AM

I would like to do it. I think I had better try a few trips along the coast first and see how 25 miles of paddling feels to a fifty year old body first.

That's an early, 2-hatch Tarpon, the version that was much lower slung and faster than today's. Cool yak. I think you'd definitely want to long, quick kayak like this one.

This is one of those ideas that pops up every few years. I've never seen anyone actually follow through with one exception. A crew from the Hobie factory did it at least once on Adventure Islands. I can't say how much of the time they sailed.

And I agree with CJ; long, coastal trips make for good training. Who's up for a 22-mile trial run?
