Number Two ………… The Value of Information

1 Attachment(s)
So it takes me year to catch my first Yellowtail. Two and a half weeks later, I catch my second Yellowtail.

I have found that information is so valuable for this sport. You can get quite a bit of great information right here on this forum.

That is not the type of information that I am talking about.

The information that I am talking about is about the current bite (or lack of) and what they are biting on.

You will not get this information on the internet in a timely manner, many reasons for that that I don't want to get into.

What I am talking is first hand or second hand knowledge from a trusted friend.

I have been going out early each week for the last few months to see " what is going on"

This is also called "time on the water" which is by far the best way to learn this sport.

A little over three weeks ago I went out on a Tuesday and this particular Tuesday, the beach was packed, hmmm bite on I guess.

Yes there was a very good Yellowtail bite going on that I witnessed first hand.

I missed catching one that day but I use the newly acquired "Valuable Information" to plan to go the following day.

Wednesday same story, good bite and I missed. But the bite was still going on and I used this information to go a third day in a row.

Thursday I find myself in a Wide Open Yellowtail Bite and I score my First Kayak Yellowtail and a big one at that.

…………….

Next week try a couple times but the bite is off.

................

Following week slow but I start hearing stories of Yellows being caught on fin bait. Twice I have like 30 live squid and no yellows around to enjoy them. Macs devour them.

I hear of more YT's being caught on fin bait.

…………………………….

Following week, Monday I have like 40 live squid and no YT's around. More macs. I take a paddle and talk with guy who tells (thank you dude) me about the great bite on fin bait. Cool Very Valuable Info. I must use this very timely Information.

I plan a trip for the following day. I cut off the squid jig and set up only for fin bait and fly lining.

My friend Jeff wants to go fishing with me and a give him the very valuable timely information and he sets up for fin bait. (He double up as you can see in his post)

So we go out on the ocean, make fin bait and start fishing.

Maybe a half hour into fishing I get to go on a sleigh ride and pull up my second YT in two and half weeks, sweet.

Then Jeff hooks up twice, wow, nice job dude. Mickey hook up but farms it. Three in our party and three yellows with one farmed seems like another wide open yellowtail bite to me. Great Day.

BTW the Fin bait bite slowed way down ………

So I have learned the value of timely information. I go out a lot to see for myself as I love just being on the water. I am also building a network of friends for sharing timely info.

Here's my number two …………….

Looks like you are getting the hang of things. Nice fish. :yt:

So from your report I am gathering that the fin bait bite is slowing and possibly trending back to squid???? Or maybe you are saying the bite is slowing but stay with the fin bait????

Maybe I'll see you on the water and find out for myself.

Good report!

dmrides 08-17-2013 01:35 PM

Congrats. Nothing beats the feeling of finding your own fish.

Thank you, I was out on Friday. I heard of only one Yt caught on Squid out of about 20 yakkers. None on fin bait. There was Zero swell (Lake La Jolla) and not much current so the fishing was extremely slow. I went in way early because of the slowness. What happened the rest of the day, I have no idea ......

Congrats, putting in the time really makes the difference. Being on the water gives you new lessons every day. Way to go, it only gets easier.

Nice fish!

Noticed the belly gaff... Try to avoid that, the skin isn't very strong and tears easily. A head gaff is ideal

TJones 08-18-2013 07:26 AM

excellent report . some will love you , others not . ;)

LOL, Haven't had much practice, you where my first as you know. All three gaffs shots did get the fish aboard on the first try tho .........

Your catches of late are well deserved due to gaining experience and putting in the time. Are you wearing pajama pants? :cheers1:

LMAO. Thanks man, good eye. Yes they are PJ's as they are warm and comfy and it had been cold out in there in the Pacific.

That got me to thinking ...

Am I the first to catch a Yellowtail in a Kayak while wearing Pajamas??? :D

Congrats, nice work!

Lets see, I worked 15 hours yesterday getting my booth ready for Artwalk at Liberty Station. I will work 12 hours each day today and on Sunday at the art show. I got up at 4 am on wednesday to go fishing, came in early and still got 8 hours of work done.

I have two small business and I work my ass off. I can plan to go fishing almost anytime as I do make my own schedule.

AS to the wife, she is awesome and lets me do my thing ........

I agree that time on the water is best. If I could, I would be out 3-4 times a week. However, I have a job that I work normal weekdays, plus most weekends I work at least one day., a wife and a 4 year old, so time on the water is limited. Maybe someday I'll have a sweet job or own my business!

Nice one! Thanks for sharing.
