What intell should a real "fishing report" include?
Just stirring the pot a little here...haha
I read lots of "fishing reports" that contain almost no information, this can't in anyway be considered a fish report can it? Should BWE add another sub forum titled; 'Self-Gloating' for these so called "fish report" threads? Shouldn't a real fish report contain at least the following: Type of fish caught Time of day fish was caught Relatively specific location of the catch Water depth Tackle used Specific bait / artificial used Now I know people don't want to give coordinates to their honey-holes and all and they probably shouldn't but what's the real reason for a fishing report? I always thought the motive behind a real report was to help others chase the bite and catch more fish...a kinda pay it forward of sorts? If it's simply an opportunity to gloat then I'm all wrong. Let the brawl begin! |

I find some of those show off post annoying. |
I agree with most of that, most of the time reports are only some vague description about the noise their clicker was making, how late/early and dark it was, or how some non-locals were in the way but somehow they managed to catch fish anyways.
We grew here, you flew here! That is all good and I enjoy reading the stories, a lot, but it would be nice to have more pertinent information like whats below. Quote:
Then again, Raskal is right. If I caught several large white girls, I would post that chit and let everyone know how awesome I am too... People will post what they post and my impression is that there are not many members who are willing to share the more specific information. They want us to figure it out ourselves, who woulda thought! haha nice post this will be fun... :leaving: |
Good post and question. Seeing a photo of a huge fish that was caUght
Some place at some time on some bait is not really a report IMO. Seperate forums mite be a good idea. Mike |
In my opinion there are no rules as to how you post your fish report. Post what you want how you want. If some people want to leave out specifics then that's their choice, if you don't like it then don't read em'.
I think some of the reasons people dont' want to give all the specifics is that those people spent time energy, money and effort to find the "bite" and don't just want to give that info away freely. Also there are people who take all the information they can get and never contribute any. If you don't know where the bite is currently, then your not paying attention. It's pretty clear where they are biting or have been biting, there are multiple locations. It's JUNE! Almost july the fish are biting where they usually bite this time of year. Just go fishing and you'll get a lot of first hand info, talk to people while your out there, you'll find that most people are pretty friendly and don't mind giving you info. |

It's hardly giving away top secret information when your report reads as follows. 6/19 - I caught this 32# yellow in 63' of water about 400yds NW of the big boiler rock at about 7:30am on a sardine 3oz dropper loop, 65# braid and a 20# 4' mono leader. I guess I just can't wrap my mind around that mentality: "I spent a lot of time, effort and cash so your gonna have to as well." It just seems so frat like...it almost falls in the hazing category...kinda gay really. |
Oh sorry you feel like your being hazed....
Just go fishing, no need to "stir the pot"...or put out your trolling lines, to get a reaction. Im going fishing this weekend how about you...or are you going to wait until somebody catches and posts up a report how you like....?;) |

I'm Gay I guess. I can remember a few times I have gone out and caught nothing and after a few days or so found where my target fish were hanging out. Fished the area for awhile (two days/three days or when I got my "fill")) without a word to anyone. Than when I did post WITH ALL the particulars...the hate mail would roll in!. Really don't bother with reports anymore. |

Oh here comes the semantics...so predictable.
Plain and simple guys...it's not a fishing report if it doesn't contain certain details....sorry...carry on. |
its just fishing.
|
Aww come'on brokeloser, this is the reaction that you wanted and expected....you got what you wanted right? Remember "stir the pot"?
|
I always catch my fish at L.J., west end of the dam near the overflow on the negative tide, on the harvest moon, next to the 3rd big sunken rock, with live bait... But no one ever believes me ,so that's why I don't post pics and sizes, longs and lats, and such....... But I do like popcorn...

Plus, their really is no argument...I'm simply making a point that we have a "Fishing Reports" forum where rarely a true fishing report is posted...that's all. We can all act stupid for the sake of debate but I'm pretty sure we all know what a fishing report should entail. |
Any one know why history repeats itself:
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/s...=reading+lines Lol this is also the same Post where Neil called matt and Elite kayak Fisherman LOL |
I've been looking for that one! :luxhello:
ELITE!!!:ack2: |
aw crap! i forgot to post this one last february!
he was foul hooked so it doesnt count anyways..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps33cfd67a.jpg sorry guys! 120 feet, water 58, right off the point |
If we know what a report should entail, then why ask what it should entail?
Sounds like we are chasing our tails. I personally have never had a big fish report from LJ. I have had cool nature encounter reports though and share those. I will share the report of my first Yellowtail catch. Patrick |
darkhorsefishdope.com. teamsewerspots.rr.com Drakeshotspotnow.com
I would pay big money for those services. Lets be honest...most of us are bragging when rewarded because of the time, cost and effort given/required, that's it. I'm merely grateful when fresh posts are put up, that's all I need to get me off the couch. Jim |

Since some people feel like I was finger pointing with this thread aimed at them (you know who you are)...haha...I should add that I do read some quality reports here. (you know who you are)
Also, with regard to sharing hot spots. Have you noticed that some of the best fishermen...Iceman (Andy) and (Fiskadoro) Jim Day to name a couple generally have no problem sharing detailed information...ironic? |
A fun story that goes with a picture is good in my book. Everyone enjoys a fun read. What you post is up to you. No matter what you do, you'll never please everyone; whether they reply and say so or not. Simple as that. Having that said, in the end its just about the :reeling:. Catching is a bonus.

JIM DAY!!!!!!!
did we just have another "elite" moment!? |

I'm just saying that the idea of a "fishing report" should not become a posted photo followed by; 'Caught this fish in the Pacific Ocean somewhere.' |

It's not all about catching fish, knowing the particular depth and temp, location... if it was a lot of us would have quit years ago. It's mostly about having fun...and we do have a lot of fun! http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps0dbf2b78.jpg |
A photo should be included, but no measuring device so there is no dispute of how heavy/long the fish actually is.
if there are any recognizable landmarks in the back of the photo, they should be blacked out. also, have a backup rod ready with a decoy bait/lure to hook perfectly into the fishes upper lip to throw off people trying to figure out your secret bait. An overestimate of the approximate size and weight should be included. Also, an approximate penis size. Remember that actual length is calculated by multiplying measured length by 1.4 to eliminate human error and parralax. |

Is it December?
I thought these little things popped up during winter when fishing is slower. My two cents. Do not tell another fisherman what to do and what to post. I usually post up info if I get lucky. However, do not tell me what I must include. Individual's choice. As soon as you tell me I can't take barracuda, guess what I'm gonna keep 40 of them!:D Just accept that we are going to disagree on many things.:) We all come from different angles: there rookies that just don't know any better. There are experienced guys that just don't need the hassle There are jerks that like to mess with people. There are pros who's paycheck depends on the info/ conditions/ crowds out there. Just fish and enjoy the posts that do make it online. Now, who has the numbers on that BSB bite in LJ? |
I especially like the pictures with the photoshopped twizzled out backgrounds.
Gives me an idea what it must be like to fish on drugs. :D |
I used to post up detailed fishing reports, until I saw the impact first hand.
10 days straight fishing last fall with just me and Rob on the water. Hardly any other kayaks and boats out there except for a couple loners. We had a pretty steady bite all to ourselves. We made some phone calls and some texts to just a few people we know could keep it quiet. After almost two weeks of steady reels peeling, an unnamed kayaker landed two solid trophy fish. He went home, posted it up by 4pm and the post had 1,000 views by the morning. When I launched the next morning, there were 25 kayaks, and no less than 15 boats on the grounds.:confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused: Any thread with "LJ" in the post will have 1,000 views in 24 hours. Think about who is watching that forum. If you think its just a few kayakers viewing it a bunch of times, you haven't been paying attention. Hell, I was fishing when the 3 Sea Bass in 2 hours post went up and within 15 minutes I received 4 phone calls and 3 text messages about the bite. :drool5::drool5::drool5::dontknow::dontknow: Look at how many WSB are getting killed up north  The same thing happened on the Iron bite this January. Half a hundred kayaks throwing irons 10 feet from each other. The internet is killing the fishery. I post my fish weeks after they are caught, and I only post the ones that have a "story" or "comedic value" to them. All the real fish reports happen on the phone and through text messages within a tight circle of fisherman who have earned a mutual respect from one another because they have showed the capability to find their own info. It's a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" relationship. Not a bunch of parasitic people who only care to paddle out when there is a high % chance of catching a fish. |

However, I must say the entertainment value of this forum is through the roof the last couple of years!:notworthy: |
DRAKE HAS IT!
|
yeah, it would be nice if more people would practice catch and release. I think some of the new size limits help keep the numbers up.
|
Guys, I hate to break it to you but we aren't the only ones catching fish and reporting it on a website...the information is out there. We all know fish move around and today's hot hole may not not yield a return tomorrow.
I just find it odd that a fishing report has become almost nothing like a report at all...or maybe I got it all wrong and need to look up the definition of report...or maybe it's just that the name of the forum is wrong, "Fishing Reports"....or...sheesh, now I'm getting all semantic. Their is nothing confusing to me about it...if you're gonna go through the trouble of posting a photo and half-ass report in a forum titled "Fishing Reports" shouldn't it have some real "report" as we know it value? Or, should it be posted in another forum? |
I love reading the story and being the novice I am it gives me something to aspire to. I hooked into some wsb 2 weeks ago and willingly shared exactly where it was at and everything. Even thoigh I didn't hook anything. But thats me I wanted to see of someone with more experience could land that sucker for breaking me off 2x. The only thing I would like to know is what tackle was used (for me the novice) so I can get some ideas of what I should be using. I like the hunt and going out and finding my own. Ive been hunting a big hali for a couple weeks now and iblove how much progress ive made on my own on finding them and catching them. To each their own.
