LJ Fish

I'm one of those weekend warrior ground and pound guys. Usually among the masses drifting around hoping I'll be the one who's lucky enough to get bent. That's when my free time shows up so I've learned to make the most of it...bring the right gear, get out, enjoy the water and hope for a shot at a quality fish...along with "everyone else" of course.

As I loaded this fish pic into my BWE album, I definitely noticed a pattern with my best catches...my most memorable yak moments...ALL of these catches were solo trips, at off times or places. I've now realized that I've NEVER caught a tail or wsb while amongst the "flotilla" (but one day I will!). I'm still missing my "on the water photo"...

Similar situation with this fish (a bit dated, sorry), it was just me and one boat out on the water. I stuck around for another (6) hours trying to get a second fish but no, this wasn't a hot bite or anything close to it. It was a ground and pound that worked out this time.

(5) trips, (5) ass freezings...40 hours on the water...two seals landed (!)...one lost radio...two wipeouts upon landings...one fish...43.8#'s...

Woodie044 03-11-2013 05:15 AM

awesome! Congrats.

What a great addition to your BWE album. Look at the size of that thing!!!
Well done sir, well done.

3 is a crowd....but, that fish is a cow! no more room in the yak.

" (5) trips, (5) ass freezings...40 hours on the water...two seals landed (!)...one lost radio...two wipeouts upon landings...one fish...43.8#'s... "

Sounds familar but more like (15) trips, (15) ass freezings...100+hrs for most I know! Congrats on a well earned catch. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting observation, it's been pretty much similar for myself as well.

jruiz 03-11-2013 08:29 AM

Nice catch. Can you fit the fish in your hatch on the way in or just find some space under or along side your legs when pedaling in? Hard work pays off eventually, and you as much as anyone else deserve a fish like that after all the WFO bites that have happened around you(us) with little to show for it.

Despite your observation on when you catch I hope to get many opportunities to fish with you this year.

Dayyyuummm!

Lipripper92592 03-11-2013 09:16 AM

Nice haul, I saw you coming in yesterday, there is nothing like time on the water.

jorluivil 03-11-2013 09:25 AM

AWESOME CATCH!!!!

your last sentence reminds me of the 15 or so trips I made to LJ before I caught my first WSB........minus the wipe outs:D

It looks like 15 is the magic number.

Way to go Jim!

This couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Jim is a friendly guy who puts in his time and is fun to fish with.

Looks like the ninja missions work after all!

:cheers1:

ful-rac 03-11-2013 09:39 AM

Yep! Congrats Jim! That's a hell of a nice fish! Definitely well deserved, for all the time and effort you put in recently!

GregAndrew 03-11-2013 10:52 AM

Wtg Jim. Seems like every time I am down there you are out. Glad to see you having better luck.

Drake 03-11-2013 11:17 AM

I can't think of anyone who appreciates a good hard earned stoke as much as you. Always a pleasure being on the water with ya :notworthy:

JeffB 03-11-2013 02:11 PM

That thing is a freakin' toad! Nice, very nice!

madncrzydm 03-11-2013 02:14 PM

Awesome catch! Cant wait to pull one of those in one day...

bellcon 03-11-2013 03:06 PM

Quality fish for sure, congrats!

jaws197 03-11-2013 03:31 PM

Well earned Jim! You put in MORE than your fair share on the water my friend! I hope to spend more time on the water with you soon, you are definitely "DA MAN"! Congrats sir!

:you_rock::wsb:

Ggiannig89 03-11-2013 04:52 PM

Jeez that thing a fatty congrats! Hope I figure out how to pull one of those in this year! Squid for bait?

romspacenut 03-11-2013 05:05 PM

Nice beast there Jim!

kaya_one 03-11-2013 06:20 PM

You need a 2nd yak trailing to haul that thing.

roby 03-11-2013 06:57 PM

So be honest Jim....which fish gave you more satisfaction. This WSB or the one trout you caught at Irvine.

Congrats on a nice fish!!

ericko 03-11-2013 09:40 PM

Well done jim... i need to go south soon.

taggermike 03-12-2013 08:21 AM

Well done. Sounds like you really earned that fish. Being a great angler helps of course but time on the water is key. I'm with you about fishing in a croud; I rarey catch catch any thing and getting away from crouds is why I bought a kayak in the first place. Keep up the good work. Mike

lamb 03-12-2013 09:44 PM

Earned!

Nice fish Jim!

Stoked for ya'!

One thing to remember when on those missions to lay the meat on the deck.... SUNSCREEN! :)

NoMotor 03-14-2013 07:27 PM

steveooo 03-14-2013 07:44 PM

"(5) trips, (5) ass freezings...40 hours on the water.."

class act

What a classy post. I have to admit, I have ventured out to LJ twice. The last time was ugly, losing it in my entry, and capsizing once I got out there. I have not been back since and have been licking my wounds in the bay where I am comfortable. Nothing wrong with that I guess, except for one thing. No WSB or YT in the bay! It's time to try again. Thanks for the post.

Janine
