bus kid 01-07-2013 04:16 PM

What if any fuel sur charge, and whats the per squid hazmat charge?

ful-rac 01-07-2013 04:21 PM

who knows?....it's gonna be fun!

danjor 01-07-2013 04:22 PM

I was going to go tonight but didn't because of overtime at work. I might go tomorrow since I'm off and the wind should calm down. Gotta go see if sports chalet has any jigs.
Do they use the single large jig or use the jig we use for smaller bait squid with multiple tiny jigs with a bigger jig in the bottom of it, if that makes and since

bus kid 01-07-2013 04:42 PM

If your gonnna go get the big jig. I think i'll wait until pierpoint or LB marina starts running trips.

I would bring a big jig the 2' model, and also the medium sized ones 10" models. Don't forget to bring sinkers. The smaller jigs will work but if we get into some bigger models they'll rip out. You really want to catch'em 1 at a time, more than that might be a problem....

Hopefully they hang out for awhile...enough to start seeing them up north in our hood...but you can never wait to catch these things if you want them. They could all dissapear tomorrow for all we know...

What size sinkers. And I had no clue there were 2' squid jigs  I thought the 10-12" ones were the big ones

ful-rac 01-07-2013 05:13 PM

They might not be exactly 2' but maybe 20"s

Any tackle shop should have em, landing probably has them at a premium price...

Dannowar 01-07-2013 05:50 PM

Don't store it in your wife's nightstand....

We went out last night on the Seaforth outta Mission Bay. It was fun experience. I would suggest to take a look at the weather forecast to prevent the sickness.

Half the boat was:drool5:

I have 2 big squid jigs forsale. Shoot me a pm if interested

Did ya catch any and when it was all said and done how much does a trip like that cost? :D

icelogger 01-07-2013 08:11 PM

Yeah I caught 4.

All said and done it was around $75 including a squid jig, meal, and tip for filleting. I brought my own rod.

MarkT 01-07-2013 08:24 PM

Humbolts

I was on the Clemente on that 1/5 trip. We got into them below San Mateo Point at the bottom of San Clemente... outside of Trestles. They were 5-10# averaging 8#. My son and I each got 20. Except for one he kept the others were stomped and released to feed the crabs. Lots of fun! They charge $3 to clean one and you had to have anything you kept cleaned on board... the landing doesn't want ink dripped on the dock, sidewalks and parking lots. The 7 oz 3-prong glow in the dark squid jigs are perfect. They worked better than the 20" mondo models. We used 40# and 50# line but 30# would've been fine too. Just get out and kill all you can while they're around. Dana is charging $25 and there's no jackpot available. They're locusts of sea and need to be gotten rid of. BTW, they actually tasted pretty good fried up!

inbx3 01-07-2013 08:33 PM

I know you're up north but Dana Landing in MB has BOGO on the squid jigs. Like them on Facebook to see the special. Just FYI.

JeffB 01-07-2013 08:58 PM

I went out last night, and not one person caught a squid down in San Diego on the big jigs. All of our squid being caught were on the medium jigs

ful-rac 01-08-2013 06:08 AM

Well sounds like these are the good to eat ones...im takenem all home!

PapaDave 01-08-2013 06:50 AM

Maybe I'll give it a try this evening, DP most likely.

ful-rac 01-08-2013 07:37 AM

510 giant squid last night outta DP. Cant wait! Heh heh! I saw some squid pictures this morning and they are indeed the good ones. Extra processing is not required on these, other than removing the membranes... just fryem up, the best calamari!

StinkyMatt 01-08-2013 07:41 AM

Hey Tony,

Can't go with you, taking my grandma to the airport and later washing my cat.

:D

If that stuff is really good and you catch a bunch of it bring it to our camping trip in two weeks.

danjor 01-08-2013 08:36 AM

So I went to there website to buy a ticket and there was no option to select tonight. So I was like wtf they can't be sold out! So I called and the lady said they have plenty of spots left so I reserved my spot. $22 tonight a $3 discount!!! Lol see you guys out there. Gotta go pick up my license and some jigs this afternoon

ful-rac 01-08-2013 02:43 PM

Im here! Weathers perfect, they have 3 boats going out tonight over 100 ppl

danjor 01-08-2013 03:02 PM

:iagree:

Don't forget to fry them first

fishsouthcounty 01-08-2013 05:29 PM

I did this maybe 10 years ago. First and last time. It's definitely a cool experience but one was enough for me. They were so thick that i watched the cigarette butts from the dickheads that flicked them in the water get picked off the surface. Indeed they are ravenous bastards and better off much farther from our inshore waters. The ones we were getting were 4-6 footers though. Good luck out there tonight fellas.

ful-rac 01-08-2013 07:09 PM

does that mean there is actually a catch limit on them? Has the size improved at all or still sub double digits?

Catch limit is when the deckhands decide there's too many to clean.
Same on our boat except we had to sit and wait until they cleaned them all. Didn't get in until 11  fishing was stupidly wide open. I kept 10 and catch, stomped and released 30+ more, I lost count around 25 and caught a lot more. Every time I would kick a dead one in another one would pull it back down to the depths within a few seconds. Lol
Great experience but I agree this will probably be my one and only time I fish for these.
BTW anyone want to buy a slightly used squid jig? $10 its the 10" smaller version of the mondo one.

ful-rac 01-09-2013 08:12 AM

Well the Squid fish'n went pretty good last night. We spent more time looking for these damn things than we actually spent fishing. When we finally found them....it was good fish'n, it only took us an hour or less for most people to get as much as they wanted or wanted to pay for.... Just like danjor said you got your limit when the deckhands decide there are too many to clean. I wanted to stay and catch more but....we probably would still be cleaning squid out there right now....

I was on the Dana Pride last night, and it was crazy wide open. In under an hour we had all we wanted and then some. Kept 11 of these, released many more...

Interested in seeing some of that gopro footage

danjor 01-10-2013 07:34 PM

OMG these are so tasty!!!!
After cutting the membrane off the top and the bottom. Roughly 1/16 off the top and bottom.
And soaking in milk overnight, lightly breaded and fried this is better than any squid I have had! No pounding or tenderizing needed and the overnight soak is probably not necessary either.
The best part I have about 19lbs of steaks left!
