Kayak protection
Noticed that the very front of my PA was starting to wear..so I looked into finding some protection. Came across this protective strip you can put on your kayak called keel eazy. There were several other manufacturers that had something similar but this was specifically made for kayaks.
Heres the front end of my PA....start'n to wear a little.. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...9A45763A2B.jpg Try'n to figure out were to place the new keel eazy strip.. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...9A55BDD73C.jpg With a little bit of heat, this stuff sticks pretty good!!! http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...9A5FB6AB65.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...9A67DA9B66.jpg After finishing the front...I thought I'd take care of the back too....here's before http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...9A79BD182B.jpg And after.... http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...9A821DC56D.jpg Hopefully this stuff works out...... at $4 a foot it's not too bad, for what it protects. |
Nice! Where'd you pick it up at? Let us know how well it holds up. Mine could use that in the front.
|
Nice! I've been looking for something like that for my Hobie AI.
|
I got it directly from the website, Just google keeleazy and it should be the first one that pops up. Hopefully this stuff doesn't peel off the first time I take it out, but I doubt it, looks pretty solid.

Tony,
I tried it on some rentals and it did not hold up for very long...........rentals get put through some serious wear and tear though. :D http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...9/IMG_0167.jpg |
I used keel easy strips on 2 kayaks and they held up well. I did change them out once a year when they start to get tore up. Use a heat gun when applying it helps bond to the hull

Protection is important. I was going to post this in the share your inovations thread.

Damn. I must be an east county redneck. DUCT TAPE. 3 dollars a roll.
|
That stuff was orginally made for boats so I'm sure it will hold up, I'll wait to see what it does for you before I use it on my Outback.
|
Thanks for the post.my pa is starting to get scraped up from the dana boat launch.man that launch is like a cheese grader on my hull.i will be trying this stuff out.

I'd think that it's obvious that's not me from that skinny roadbike 700c tube. Back on topic you can actually take larger bike tube like for a 26x2.125 cut a piece a foot long, cut one side open and trim it into the same type shape used above. You then glue it to your keel using spray contact trim adhesive. I've a friend that does that and it works. (I'm thinking he's not seen the post yet) Inner tube rubber may not last as long but old tubes are free if you cycle a lot (I do) it lasts longer then duct tape, and it's softer then plastic so it won't scratch up your car paint. |
You can request a free sample on their site. They sent me a 10" strip and I have been using it on the back keel. So far so good.

I've been gone for too long! Nice to come back and see this thread :) Hope all you boys are having fun.
|
Thanks for sharing, i could use some of this on the back of my yak.

Good stuff there Tony. The price seems right too. I'll have to check it out the next time we hit the water.
|
After years and years of making kayaks...you would think that all the kayak manufactures would THINK to put extra protection under the kayak were it drags.
Lots of room for improvment still needs to come. :stupido: |
has anyone ever worn a hole in the yak by years of dragging in and out of the water?
My outback is ugly down under (scratched to hell). Not sure I should be worried or not. |

Keel Eazy update!
Well guys I went out to irvine lake with my newly installed keel eazy strip and it performed great and stayed on just fine. Looked perfect at the end of the day. This afternoon I took the ol' PA off the truck, and wheeled it to the back of the shop. I wanted to see what would happen if I dragged it across some asphalt a little.... so I gave it a test, lifted the back end up and dragged it back...probably 3"......to my surprise.....it burned right thru the strip!!!! Wow! I guess this stuff isn't as tough as I thought it was....I have some left over strips that I will reapply, and this time I won't drag it....
