San Quintin, 2012
Hit up San Quintin this week and stayed at the Old Mill . I have always driven south of the Old Mill to do Central and Southern Baja trips and have stayed at the Old Mill once to get some sleep on way down. The Old Mill is a great place with simple accommodations, cheap prices ($16.00/bed)friendly people and a hot shower. Also a restaurant that prepared our fish on two different nights in various ways.

Mike (Florida Boy) caught a pig on the second day......no scale but the thing was a beast and didn't come close to fitting in his cooler. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall.../IMG_01701.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_0164.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_0178.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_0180.JPG The third day we went out on a 25 foot Parker through K & M Landing with the kayaks on board. Lined up the trip the week prior with Captain Kelley due to some expected swell. His son George was our Captain and he put us in the area where some recent WSB activity had been. We ended up with three WSB, multiple rock fish, a tail hooked thresher and another thresher which were lost/released. George caught a nice halibut which he ended up giving us the majority of. I highly recommend K & M if you want to do a mothership trip down in San Quintin. Family run, very nice and safe with a ton of local knowledge . http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...690/photo9.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall.../IMG_01912.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall.../IMG_01932.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_0194.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_0199.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall.../IMG_02022.JPG I always seem to find a way to get stuck in Baja. Well not too bad, three times in 20+ years. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...90/photo_1.JPG All and all a great trip with no mechanical errors on or off the water, plenty of fish to be had, no issues with the authorities through Tijuana or Ensenada (even after missing a turn twice in Tijuana ), good company, and plenty of good memories. Next year going to go down 2-3 times through August -October and can't wait to do it again.:reeling: and just noticed I put this in fishing discussions.......sorry |
Awesome!
I'm hoping to setup a trip next year to San Quintin, if I do you're coming with us!!! |

That sounds fun! Allways wanted to go to mexico but never have due to everone i know talking about its too dangerous to go down there because of the cartels and crap.
But epic trip, i would love to go somewhere like that someday |
Great write and pics. Even the food shot had me drooling, maybe not as much as that pig WSB Mike caught. HUGE! Looks like it could have gone 70lbs.

Thanks for sharing Tom! Looks like Mike has figured out this kayak fishing :D Fish all around sounds like a perfect fishing adventure. :luxhello:
|
WOW!!! Very nice my friend... Thanks for sharing:)

Nice work! 30 years of traveling to baja and not once have I had any issues other than getting stuck as well. And we got lost once. But two maps and a 12 pack later and our destination was found.
|
wow, very cool. If you do another trip, put a post and we can caravan down. I'd love to go! Great fishing with all those WSB! And there is usually at least good rockfish.
|
Awsome story and pics! I'm ready!

You guys killed it down there, and I felt I was part of the show due to great photos.:D I promise not to make one complaint, follow all directions, I have 4wd and will buy beer. Please invite me on the next journey. |
Duuuuuuudes!!!!! WTG you guys. I am guessing that you missed the ramp to HWY 1 ? I love the sign on the other side of the exit. How many people would be comfortable at the place you stayed?
|
That is one Toad of a WSB! Congrats on the great trip.

Hi Greg, we got there on Monday night and the place was empty and then on the last night a ton of guys showed up with Baja 1000 like rigs......the Old Mill can hold a lot of people....we made the turn onto col san diego and could not get out due to barrier.......then we missed it again in the darkness......thought for sure we would be pulled over but we made it through. |
awesome!. I like the shot of everyone standing around watching you dig out.....
|
gotta love baja and SQ. old mill is a great place, and the restaurant there is awesome. nice report and :wsb::wsb::wsb:
|
Yeah!!
Sweet write up and pics Tom!
Glad you had a great time and caught a few. Bummed I couldn't make it down with you guys. Let me know when the next trip is. Last night I went out to LJ for the first time after surgery. Was way outside in 120+ FOW. Caught a few rockfish and fought something huge, i mean huge! for about 10-15 minutes. I could not tire it out. It was the first time I broke a sweat fighting a fish from the yak. My #30 Flouro top shot finally snapped on the polymer knot. Definately a few new lessons learned and psyched to get back out there again. Cheers |
AWESOME TRIP!!!! :cheers1:
Grande Corvina!!!!! :cheers1: |
Great report.
Always bring some newspapers in the car... great for snow or sand... |
Nice

VIVA BAJA!
Damn! and Damn! What a trip, Thanx tom for setting it up. I hate to admit that was my first legal white sea bass. Next year a carravan would be awsome! As for the rock fish they were caught by accident moreless, I had lost a nice red next to the kayak and then pulled up a nice ling. left it in my lap as my bait rod started to sing only to watch the ling spit the croc and flip back in. The crazy thing is the boat we went on said 90% of the WSB were on crocs. The larger one was caught on a fat smelt! All on my new 11 ft. revo!
|
WTG! Guys :D
Nice :wsb: |
Don't listen to every one.

Don't listen to every one. Especially the people that have never been their. I've been to San Quintin over 10 times and Erendira twice this year. In July, I took 1 of my customers and 3 of his friends for the first time. Now they want to go back next year. I never had any problems with any body. So give it a try. Trust me, you will want to go back every year. I might go back to Erendira for some bottom fishing in Jan. or Feb. You are more than welcome to go with us. |
Hit me up when you make the plans. Sounds fun.
