All in the timing - cherry is broken
So I've been fishing La Jolla for a year now, and never pulled on anything bigger than a Calico.
Saturday was my day to fish, and I dedicated the entire day to LJ, launching by 5am. I "fished" all day, and here it was 3pm and I'm thinking ... I bring that celabratory beer with me EVERY trip, for the last year, and I never drink it.... screw it .. I'm just gonna drink it and break tradition. So I'm sitting in choppy water, swells from multiple directions, the winds picking up, thinking about that beer, and WHAM, ZZZZZZZZZZZZ, .... WOW, so THAT'S what it's like. I'm already knee deep in the kelp, so yes, that elusive WSB took a bunch of line and went straight down and achored himself. Needless to say I lost that one, but the OJT is invaluable. Sure, I now have some questions about what I did wrong, and how can I improve, but nothing beats the feeling of actually seeing the goliath of fish take your line, run with it, and the ensuing battle that lasted 20 minutes, and made me realize this IS a workout. Never had that beer, bummed about loosing the fish, tired from getting up so damn early .... screw it, I'm heading towards the launch. Peddle out of the kelp and into clear waters, what the hell, I had one last mac, may as well pin him on and shut down the bait tank...... peddle peddle peddle .... HEY ... what the .... No birds, and those are not small baits jumping on the surface .. THOSE are YT THRASHING. Reach around and grab that almost new 9' Jig stick that I've been practicing with and prepare to launch and hey ................ZZZZZZZZZZZZ, .... the other rod with that last mac started screaming. Ok, secure the jig stick and fight the battle with the line that is already hooked up. Wow, two different battles within 30 minutes, and two totally different feelings. Of course, two different rods and reels also, but that YT (while not big) was a brute ! .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...637/1st_YT.JPG |

Way to go Greg. This is a very good sign. Maybe it is finally my turn.
I have had last mac hookups before. When that happens, the beer really tastes good. Hopefully, you took a sip or two. Bob |
Bummer on the first fish, But glad it all worked out , Congrats on landing your first Yt on the yak :luxhello::cheers1:
|
Congratulations on that yellow.
After reading your post the first thing that came to mind was.... -Why not fire that jig at the the breaking yellows ? When opportunity knocks be ready to pull the trigger. Just imagine how that double would have felt. Either way you had an epic day and a fresh dose of motivation. :) |
 Great job Greg!!!! I can't wait to hook up with a Y.T. !!!!! :reel:
|
Congrats! I hope you uncorked that beer
Once your done :eating: fire away with those questions you were thinking of. |
nice, congrats to you:)

|

Nice fish! From my experience, when you put pressure on yourself to catch, the fish somehow sense it and it's hard to get bit. As soon as you are in the mindset of "just out for a nice leisurely stroll on the kayak", that's when you get hammered. It happens almost everytime for me.
Great fish, it will taste so much better knowing that you secured it for your family. Great job! Evan |
Way to persist. How did that beer taste?
|
congratulations buddy
|
Nice Job, now your really hooked. The WSB will come:luxhello:
|
Great job Greg! There is no quit in those yellows. :cheers1:
|
Congrats Greg!
|
Good Job Greg! I was out there too on yesterday, on a buddy's aluminum. No love for us though. That ear to ear grin says it all. I hopefully will be out there in two weeks. Had to patch a hole in my yak from the last hooping night, and I am going to go through my yak thoroughly before the LJ session. :yt:
next up for you is:wsb:! Congrats! |
Nice jello......can't wait for my cherry to be popped.
|
that's awesome!!! just reading your story gets my blood pumping...
|
This is only the beginning, Greg!
The first solid fish is always the hardest one to catch; you'll just have to trust me on that. The good news is that you're clearly on the fast track to consistent success. May your slow trickle of today turn into a raging river before you know it. ;)

alright Greg great job congrats on the YT bet that tasted good raw:reel::luxhello:
|
Congratulations....with envy.
