I just installed air bags on the outside of my car.

I added a second set of rain gutters, just in case the first one leaks.

I also have two spare tires, you never know.

You elect to go sit on a plastic stick in the middle of the ocean that is full of sharks.

Lack of Wsb reports is more scary than the tax man.:D

Yea what he said! Break out the steel leader wire with a HUGE hook on it and half a yellowtail!

Actually, I was on a charter out of San Diego a bunch of years back and we were killing small yellowtail. One of the deck hands spotted a shark fin and hooked the better half of a Bonita on a big honkin hook and chucked it right in front of the sharks path. He didn't hook up but I was rather impressed with the accuracy displayed with the cast. Not sure what kind of shark it was but it was a sizable dorsal fin and the tail fin was certainly not a Thresher.

Ive heard if you urinate in the water it can attract sharks. It resembles a fish panicking and or being attacked.
Kinda like bears with menstration but sharks and pee....

come across them multiple times. a possible small 4fter in Oceanside harbor, a 7fter out of Newport one in LJ that was just as long as my PA14...

if you can see them, your OK. its the ones you don't see you have to worry about.

I'm kinda a shark magnet if you haven't noticed... thats why i don't fish for other game fish that often.

on a serious note, those shark repellents do repel small sharks, like blacktips, but only because they are made from the liver oils and other naturally occurring scents in... yep black tips. what eats black tips? Tigers, Hammers, Bulls and probably great whites... its like chum for larger sharks.

when we use a sharp nose or black tip for bait, the smaller sharks will clear the area immediately and the bite will shut down. only until that big hammer or tiger finds the baited shark.

good info and entertaining posts, thanks guys. I guess if I am ever blessed to see one slowly cruising by I will just sit and enjoy the fact that I get to see such a magnificent creature so close. Like you all have said if its my time its my time, if it isn't, I got to experience something much of the population hasn't.

hahaha, was browsing this thread and thought that it was funny that right before I had a thresher circle my kayak and take my flylined mackerel, I peed off my yak... I have always thought there was something to this theory.

on radio this morning..

apparently 2 "large sharks" seen (by helicopter) within 15-20 feet of surfers, in Manhattan Beach area.

ho hum... as said above, fear not the enemy you see, but fear the enemy you don't see.!

For me seeing the tax man the 1st time was a religious experience, I knew I was in the presence of greatness. We both knew if he wanted me, I would never see him coming. He was just enriching my life by saying hi!

Hondatom 07-12-2013 07:34 AM

Bat spray, Golf clubs, and pictures of the mother in law?

Now that shit is funny!

My question is how do you get the seat out of your crack after a GWS sighting? I would clamp up so tight you couldn't drag a needle out of my ass with a tractor.

TJones 07-12-2013 07:39 AM

sack up and throw a chum bucket out

and then toss a bait . :iagree:

makobob 07-12-2013 07:47 AM

Yea, but what do you do when the kids ask, "can we keep him, and take him home?"

taggermike 07-12-2013 11:33 AM

I dont have to be faster then then the shark, only faster than you. Good reason to take a newbie with you.

Seriously though, if its gonna happen there is not a great deal you can do. Gotta agree that if the shark makes a slow curious approach it wasn't out to eat you. I surfed all over Humboldt county for years and just kinda came to grips with the fact that you give your "top of the food chain" seat while you're in the ocean. I've seen about every other creature that lives in the ocean off Cali. Confident I'll get a drive by from the land lord some day.Mike

If yo were really worried about it then just go into some thick kelp. It will make it more difficult for it to maneuver into an optimal position for an attack. Personally I wish I could see one everytime I go out. If I can see him than the dogs can see him and he will be less likely to go for stuff on my line. Well that may be wishful thinking:rolleyes: but i would rather lose a fish to the white than to a dog.

TJones 07-12-2013 02:09 PM

strange thing

the other day the dogs acted like he was not there . they kept sunbathing , and then all of a sudden one less dog was around . :D . and this shark was no gentle giant . he was hungry and agitated .
